"Devon’s best kept secret... Just inland from some of Devon’s loveliest and most natural beaches lies the village of Tuckenhay set along Bow Creek on the River Dart...."

In a setting of stunning natural beauty, Tuckenhay Mill is the centrepiece of a cluster of country homes and cottages with superb leisure facilities including two indoor and one outdoor pools, making it ideal for a family holiday for all ages.
The Mill which once produced some of the finest paper in the land, nestles in the green and shady Bow Creek, a languid inlet of the River Dart where private yachts have replaced the old tall-masted ships and barges. Around the mill are all the buildings which once went to make up a small bustling village port. These listed buildings have been sympathetically restored and converted to a delightful range of holiday properties to suit larger family parties. Awards have been won for the conversion of buildings and the conservation of the area. With so much to do, many holidaymakers return year after year.

South Devon awaits you
Tuckenhay is only a 20-minute drive from the superb award-winning beach at Blackpool Sands and about 30 minutes from a surfing beach at Bantham, as well as some of the best natural beaches to be found anywhere in the UK.
There is also extensive access to the coastal footpath for walking and the wilderness that is Dartmoor for walking, climbing and riding.
This is a mecca for ramblers, bird-watchers, swimmers, surfers, horse riders, golfers and those interested in fishing, boating, sailing and windsurfing.
In addition, there are many historic NT houses to visit including Agatha Christies’s Greenway as well as a local vineyard (with award-winning wines) at Sharpham.
Tuckenhay is only 5 miles inland from Dartmouth and 3 from the market town of Totnes. Village shop 3½ miles. Riverside inn and restaurant within walking distance.

A superb choice of cottages
Each of the cottages has been individually styled to offer comfortable and spacious accommodation. Great care has been taken to retain the feel of the original buildings and extensive use has been made of traditional materials. Most have garden, terrace or patio. Individual cottage details are shown on the following pages.
Many cottages have more than one bathroom and some have an en-suite bathroom to every bedroom. Kitchens are comprehensively equipped: most have dishwashers and all have microwave cookers.
Couples and honeymooners will feel snug and comfortable in the small cottages: Mill Leat, Mill Stream and Mill Spring. Families can spread out in Papermaker’s or Turbine Cottages, while Mill Lodge, Edgecombe Barn and Tuckenhay Mill House will sleep larger parties in comfort. Of course, combinations of cottages can accommodate bigger gatherings of family or friends.

This spacious two-storey property is very similar in layout to 2 Salle Cottage. Spacious sitting-room reached via glazed doors from split-level hall with polished wooden floor. French doors and small flight of steps to paved terrace with valley views. Kitchen/dining room with superb traditional country-style kitchen with farmhouse table and chairs. Separate toilet. First floor: Double bedroom with en-suite bathroom (bath, wash basin only). Two twin bedrooms (one with 2ft 6in beds). Single child’s bedroom. Bathroom and toilet.

Tuckenhay Mill has led the way with most of the pools being heated by ground source heat pumps. Awards have been given for energy saving as well as pool design and conversion of buildings. 2008 saw the extension of the 20 acres of stunning natural landscape opening up nearly a mile of footpaths through dells, meadows and woodlands along with a natural waterfall. This is the place to enjoy a personal ‘Spring or Autumn Watch’ with swallows in the log store, buzzards on the adjacent hillside, owls in the woods and ducks and swans down on Bow Creek. Strolls can be taken with the dog and picnics enjoyed on a bench by the river. Children can stroke the goats and even collect eggs for breakfast from the hens (when laying)!

Tuckenhay Mill is fine, great spot, but the common areas are shabby. We stayed in Mill Leat (and paid for our family to stay in 3 Salle. ) We would go back to Mill Leat. But the internals of 3 Salle badly need updating.

There were a few things in the cottage which could be improved. The ensuite didn't have a toilet. The bathroom would benefit from a stand-up shower and shower screen or curtain. Towels should be provided. There should be a washing machine. It would be better if there was children's eating and drinking equipment. The water was too hot considering children will be staying there. The leisure facilities were fantastic but I don't think, considering how much I paid that you should have to pay extra for the laundry facilities, sauna and pool table. Having said all of this it was a very enjoyable stay.

We have stayed at Tuckenhay Mill three times now and have always enjoyed the facilities. We have even got used to the narrow lanes. We all enjoy the facilities and the swimming pools. There are a couple of things which would make staying at 3 Salle Cottage more comfortable. The most important thing to us was that we expected the en-suite to have a toilet. Secondly there was no hook in the downstairs loo to hang a towel - a very small point but a frustrating one. Lastly we were seven people staying and there were only 7 knives (plus two kitchen knives) which meant that we had to keep washing them during the mealtime. We reported some problems with the plumbing in the bathroom and they were addressed immediately and when we got back to the cottage in the evening we had a flushing loo and a new tap. We were very impressed with the speed with which these repairs were done. Overall a very happy holiday if a tad expensive. Now that the grandchildren are growing up we do not make use of all the facilities so I do not expect we will be going back to Tuckenhay.

We arrived a couple of hours early and were kindly allowed to fill the two fridges and use all site facilities. First impression of the cottage was clean and tidy but a little dated with some of the furniture requiring refreshing or replacement. Kitchen was well equipped. The one ensuite did not include a toilet so only two were available, one up and one down. The upstairs cistern took 15-20 mins to fill so not really suitable for use by seven occupants. Two of the bedroom doors didn't close properly and similarly some windows didn't either whilst two windows were screwed shut! The one single bedroom is too small for adult occupation and when the roof light is open the door cannot be fully opened or closed. All onsite facilities are clean, well maintained and reasonably modern. The pools are superb. The manager was a lovely helpful lady and our holiday overall was excellent and we would go again but perhaps try another cottage.

Tuckenhay Mill is absolutely idyllic and the cottage was spotless, well equipped and very comfortable, even with 7 of us staying. The facilities at the Mill are perfect for kids and adults alike and it was so lovely to be able to sit in the hot tub outside in April, even if the outdoor pool was a little chilly for all except my youngest son! The indoor pools are brilliant, clean, fun with a nice balance of relaxed and basic in the first, and quiet and a little more grown up in the second. Two really good pubs within walking distance, both really pretty and serving great good. Highly recommended for families.

Excellent swimming pools. Other facilities indoors were rather tired looking. The cottage was comfortable and well equipped. It wasn't ready for our arrival but we sorted that when we managed to get a phone signal. We were locked out of the cottage one day when the rather old latch slipped while I popped outside. The rest of the family were in their swimming gear and it was raining. As the site is not manned it was rather traumatic, but we managed to contact someone and were given the number to a key safe. Thus the 2 problems were sorted by the wonderful Debbie, but I feel they could have been avoided.

Second great holiday at Tuckenhay. Could easily have spent all week not even leaving the grounds. Outdoor pool still being open during October half term was a huge bonus and the water was surprisingly warm.
