Crakeld Holm enjoys a most picturesque location in the Eden Valley, which is on the eastern side of Cumbria, on the fringe of the Lake District. It nestles in an idyllic, scenic, rural setting overlooking the beautiful River Eden. It is renovated, furnished and presented to a high standard and is equipped with super-fast broadband with a wireless download speed of approximately 30Mb/s. The property was originally a sandstone bank barn dating from the 18th century but is now transformed into a fabulous detached four-bedroom house. Much of the original character has been retained, in particular the main entrance with its lovely sandstone archway which leads into the original upper hayloft. This is now a dramatic open-plan living area and kitchen with traditional slit windows, hefty timber beams and high ceiling. The room itself is a showstopper, only bettered by the wonderful southerly view from the French windows and balcony out over the river and viaduct beyond.

Eden is a haven for peace, tranquillity and a vast variety of wildlife, perfect for ornithologists and country lovers. It is an outstanding area for walking, whether for a hike on the high open fells or a gentle riverside stroll. Cyclists will love the quiet country lanes and the C2C cycle route. Outdoor activities don’t stop here - why not try canoeing on Ullswater (10 miles), a spot of fishing on the doorstep for trout, salmon and grayling (by prior arrangement with the owners), pony trekking or golf in Penrith (6 miles). There are attractions for the whole family including a cruise on Ullswater, or a ride on a restored railway high in the North Pennines! Surrounded by dramatic landscapes including Ullswater and the north eastern fells, it is also close to both the borders of Scotland and the Yorkshire Dales. This secluded and unspoilt destination will inspire, rejuvenate and refresh visitors at any time of the year. A lively calendar of events adds to a holiday here with festivals of all kinds, country and craft fairs, farmers’ markets, and traditional agricultural shows to name just a few. Shops 3 miles, pub 1 mile.

Seven steps to main entrance at first floor (level side entrance): Entrance hall. Spacious open-plan living/dining room with wood-burning stove, traditional slit windows, hefty timber beams, high ceiling, wooden floor, well-equipped kitchen area and French doors to balcony. Utility and toilet. Twin bedroom with en-suite bathroom with shower attachment and toilet. Ground floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed and en-suite bathroom with shower attachment and toilet. Great property. Had a fun and relaxing time, good home base for day trips to a variety of sights. Only recommendation is get rid of the mouse, and the droppings in the kitchen cupboard.

This was a wonderful holiday in almost every respect. With an age range of 76 down to 8, our family's needs are quite specialised, and in terms of location, comfort, amenities and value for money Crakeld Holm met most of them. We enjoyed excursions to Hutton in the Forest, Treetop Nets, Lowther Castle and Rhegeld - all of them readily accessible, and enjoyable to drive to - and closer to home enjoyed exploring the local area; walking by the river, playing cricket in the enclosed grounds and enjoying the solitude and quietness. Our small son enjoyed acting as gate-man during our excursions and discovered an unexpected talent for herding the sheep out of harm's way in the process. Our niggles, as may be seen from the scores above, are minor. In terms of cleanliness we were unsettled to find an infestation of mice in the right-hand corner cupboard near the sink unit [a typical "townie" reaction, you may feel] - droppings and a well nibbled Penguin biscuit. And in terms of equipment, our family cook felt that the kitchen equipment could do with some additional items; specifically, a pair of oven gloves, a colander, a hand-whisk that works, medium and small-sized pyrex lidded-casserole dishes, a couple of mixing bowls and a large serving spatula. It is, however, important to see these reservations as minor and in the end relatively unimportant; Crakeld Holm has so much going for it in every other respect that it gave us a memorable holiday in a wonderful setting.

Response on behalf of the owner:- Thank you John and Helen, we always appreciate feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed yourselves. Obviously having any mice is not acceptable although I’m not sure this constitutes an infestation. As you infer, it is difficult to eradicate mice totally in a rural environment. Naturally we do have an ongoing pest control contract in place which is generally successful and thankfully your experience is extremely uncommon. We note your comments in relation to kitchen equipment. These items are on our inventory but from time to time some of them do need replacing or re-purchasing. Thank you for drawing our attention to this. We are glad you enjoyed the setting and had a memorable holiday and thank you again for your feedback.

This is a lovely barn conversion with a fabulous huge living room/ dining kitchen where the whole family can hang out. We really enjoyed our week - great cycling direct from the house and a short journey to get to the lakes and mountains or Pennine Way. Stunning countryside all round. We did a perfect mix of activity and utter lazing about, and enjoyed the space playing games, reading, doing jigsaws, cooking, eating and drinking wine! Cleanliness: all in good order except that the wonderful vaulted ceiling needs someone to figure out how to get those spiders down! Local amenities I gave a low score because it is quite remote so there is nothing locally except the river and a lot of sheep - but that's the point of it, so the question isn't helpful! Very good Co-op 3 miles away and Tesco delivery found it from postcode even though the house doesn't feature on its database. (Direct them to red sandstone barn opposite corrugated iron parking barn!) I wouldn't recommend this place unless you are certain you can trust your kids to obey safety instructions - the river is fast and the ruins treacherous. Toddlers would be perfectly safe in the walled garden, though.
