Graythwaite Cottages offer the opportunity for an exceptional holiday experience. The original buildings of this unique Victorian ‘model farmstead’ have been tastefully refurbished to a very high standard. They provide not only superb holiday accommodation, but also an outstanding range of facilities, including an indoor heated swimming-pool, table tennis and a fitness suite. The stunning location offers plenty of gloriously natural space to visitors and a one-mile walk (which crosses a road) leads to private frontage on the softly lapped shores of Windermere itself. A 2½-acre stocked lake provides free trout fishing and, at the hub of the estate, beautiful Graythwaite Hall’s lovely surrounding gardens are open to the public in the Spring.
The farm forms part of the Graythwaite Estate, which has been in the same family since the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and remained intact as a large working estate throughout four centuries. The farm stead, from which the cottages have been formed, was built in 1890 and its position was chosen at a time when the popularity of the Lake District was just beginning to rise in wealthy Victorian circles. Thus the tranquillity and beauty which first captivated visitors to this area can still be enjoyed in heavenly surroundings where peace reigns supreme.
Visitors are well placed to explore the extraordinary and dramatic scenery for which the Lakes are so famous. Hilltop Farm at Near Sawrey, the cottage where Beatrix Potter’s imagination was stirred to create Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck, is just 4 miles away. At Hawkshead (4 miles) there is a gallery dedicated to her original drawings and illustrations. Within 10 miles are Rydal Fell, Rydal Water, Grasmere and the cottage of the poet who made them famous and brought the Lake District to the attention of the world, William Wordsworth.
The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway (4 miles) runs through the valley of the River Leven; its trains connect with a leisurely steamer going to the busy, cosmopolitan town of Bowness-on-Windermere. The steamer also wends its way further north to Waterhead, the stop for the pretty little town of Ambleside.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. A lovely comfortable property that was ideal for our family Xmas get together. The Logburner and lovely sofas made for a great togetherness feel, while the three separate suites of bedrooms gave us the space you always need at times. The swimming pool was a much appreciated extra as we had youngsters with us. I would thoroughly recommend this property. Dec 2012.
  2. Fantastic complex in superb location. Oct 2012.
  3. Warm welcome from Peter, cottage was set in wonderful grounds. All the cottages at Graythwaite Holidays were individual, so that the complex was a nice place to be. One of our party had partial mobility (wheelchair and crutches): Peter was forthcoming and honest with advice prior to our booking; facilities were as described accessibility was good for crutches. The surrounding made for a peaceful forest walk, with a great variety of wildlife and leading to the gardens of Graythwaite Hall. Pubwise: Lakeside is a good 2 miles away; The Swan Hotel at Newby Bridge is a further mile away. For both the walk is really nice but will be by roadside. Direction were accurate but were open to misinterpretation perhaps in addition a detailed map or google map link. May 2012.
  4. The accommodation exceeded all of the groups expectations the manager of the site was extremely helpful and made us feel welcome. The pool was brilliant however you need your flip flops to get in and out of the pool as the poolside is pebbled. We are definitely going back and would recommend the complex to anyone. Brilliant place to chillax. Jan 2012.
  5. We had such a wonderful time it felt as if we had stepped back in time, no mobile signal. No stress and so, so comfortable. Dec 2011.
  6. It was amazing! the house is excellent and comfortable, incredibly well equipped! Indoor heated pool was great even when weather wasn’t great! Try the segways!! Sept 2011.
  7. A lovely property that suited our needs and requirements. Feb 2011.
  8. The general layout of the property, the open plan living and the fact that the swimming pool was just across the courtyard all worked very well for us. We were 3 generations including 4 young grandsons and they loved the pool as well as the great walks locally and other amenities all within a short traveling distance. Feb 2011.
  9. Very spacious, well maintained & cleaned to a high standard. Dec 2010.
  10. Fantastic cottage! Everything you could ever need is provided. Lovely fire. Oct 2010.
  11. Spacious, modern well equipped and set in a lovely location, but could have done with a couple of extra double beds. Sept 2010.
  12. It was absolutely ideal to be all on one floor because we had a toddler with us and also our daughter was on crutches having broken her Achille’s tendon. It was also brilliant because we were opposite the entrance to the heated, indoor pool. Great for the kids! April 2010.
  13. We really liked the accommodation and the whole estate, and the rooms and bathrooms were a good size. We had a few problems with equipment - broken dishwasher, DVD, bathroom light, and no vacuum - which was disappointing, but the estate manager was helpful in sorting these out. Sept 2009.
  14. The property was roomy, which was essential as there were ten of us, the kitchen was well stocked and the bedrooms and bathrooms were clean. Sept 2009.
  15. Comfortable and appropriate furniture. Aug 2009.
  16. Well maintained and clean. Excellent improvements had been made since the last time we stayed there. Aug 2009.
  17. This is the ideal property for a big party. June 2009.
  18. Superb value for money and an excellent location, especially with the nearby lake. June 2009.
  19. Excellent accommodation, two or even three families can share with space to have some time away from the whole group. The two fridges in the kitchen were a bonus and the kitchen was well equipped for ten people. May 2008.
  20. Extremely clean, spacious and provided all the requirements to suit a party of 11 ranging from Senior Adults to Young Children. Pool lovely and only a stones throw from the property. Thank you for making a unforgettable 30th Birthday party. June 2008.
