Property Description

"Greenwood Grange offers the ideal holiday combination - premium quality accommodation, fine facilities all within a family-run friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and it has achieved a Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold Award"

Escape ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ to the 5* rated accommodation that is Coomb Barton. Part of the luxurious Greenwood Grange Cottages collection, these exclusive abodes were the stomping grounds of one of the most celebrated English novelists of all time, Thomas Hardy. Multiple properties can be rented together for larger family milestone celebrations.
Greenwood Grange was constructed by the father of the illustrious wordsmith some 200 years ago, and apart from the obvious modern facilities, very little has been changed since. Coomb Barton oozes old-world charm throughout, in fact the Grange exudes such a strong sense of history, it’s almost tangible.
‘There’s no way like the old way’ – Coomb Barton is a true testament to the popular saying. With indoor brickwork, flagstone flooring, black beams, classic furniture and an inglenook fireplace, the scene is perfect for spending quality time with your loved ones. You can gather round beside the fire, open up a bottle of wine and while away your time in conversation, or with a bit of friendly competition at Scrabble or Monopoly. Not too big and not too small, the open-plan living/dining room/kitchen is ideal for bringing people closer together in a warm and cosy environment.
There’s so much to do in and around Greenwood Grange Cottages, so a hearty breakfast is a necessity. Thanks to the on-site free-range chickens, golden omelettes or sunny-side-up eggs on toast are your best bet. Afterwards, kiddie-winkies can be kept occupied for hours with the on-site play area, leaving literary enthusiasts free to explore the literary landscape of Hardy’s finest novels, such as Higher Brockhampton (Hardy’s ‘Upper Mellstock’) and Dorchester (Hardy’s ‘Casterbridge’). Pay a visit to the author’s school in Lower Brockhampton or the cottage where he was born and penned some of his early novels. Exploring the tranquil Thorncombe Wood, and property’s 4 acres of grassy pastureland and gardens, it’s easy to see where the author derived much of his inspiration we see in his poems.
There are 2 en-tous-cas courts for a spot of tennis in the afternoon, or the lawns are ideal for croquet and badminton. The Roman-style mural that adorns the wall by the indoor pool makes for an extravagant swim, and guests with a passion for fresh produce are permitted to pick their own fruit from the organic vegetable garden. At the end of the day, there’s arguably no better way to unwind than 20 minutes of deep relaxation in the sauna.
There’s so much to explore in the area, from sleepy villages and busy little market towns, but the real luxury in staying at Coomb Barton is in the stark natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.
It’s hard to find fault in a place like this, and after a short stay in Coomb Barton, it’s clear that Greenwood Grange Cottages’ Green Tourism Business Scheme Gold Award is well-deserved.
