Oasis of peace and tranquillity, detached lock keeper’s cottage, with wood burning stove, and views over mill stream.

For a unique holiday experience, Lock Cottage is unbeatable. Surrounded by water and accessed via a footbridge, this delightful, detached lock keeper’s cottage is an oasis of peace and tranquillity, yet is in the heart of the medieval village of Nayland on the Suffolk and Essex border. Built in 1805 with a later extension, the cottage is one of two remaining lock keeper’s cottages from the Stour Navigation which allowed barges to travel from Sudbury to the sea. The setting of the cottage is truly breathtaking with a delightful garden and the River Stour tumbling over a weir, there is plenty of wildlife to see with kingfishers, swans, herons and sometimes an otter on the weir. There is also the opportunity to fish in the lock pool, or venture out in the canoe and rowing boat provided at the property (life jackets provided). With views across the water towards the open countryside of the Dedham Vale AONB, it is hard to believe that just a 55-yard walk along the tow path leads to the village amenities. The surrounding area is a delight to explore, there are many footpaths in the village and golf is available at nearby Stoke-by-Nayland (3 miles). Flatford Mill and Dedham Village, in the heart of Constable Country, are a short drive away whilst keen gardeners may enjoy a visit to Beth Chatto’s Garden. Nearby Colchester, famous for being the oldest town in England, has a castle and museum set in attractive parkland that stretches down to the River Colne, a zoo and an interesting range of shops, restaurants, galleries and pubs. For a day by the sea, guests can choose between the sunshine coast of Essex at Frinton-on-Sea, or the nearby Heritage coastline of Suffolk where the beaches at Felixstowe, Aldeburgh, Southwold or Walberswick can be enjoyed. Shop 50 yards, pub 300 yards.

The cottage could have been cleaner - the fridge and oven needed some attention. Also, the handles on the kitchen units were greasy and I had to wipe the bath and shower tray in one of the bathrooms before use. The cottage was very warm and cosy and the location can't be faulted, although the access to the property is tricky for anyone who has accessibility issues and you need to be prepared to park on the road if you have anything other than a small car - as the garage is tight. In the garden foliage does need cutting back to allow more light into and to make the most of the waterfront views from some of the rooms. The garden furniture and railing along the towpath are also in need of some attention. The cottage could be perfect with these issues addressed.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner. We should like to thank our guest for the comments. We appreciate the feedback. We had 24 hours notice of this booking. It was requested for a day which was not a normal changeover, so our housekeeper was not available for the final clean. Before accepting the booking we telephoned the guest to explain the cleaning issue and to discuss the possible accessibility issues for someone with a physical disability. The guest understood and accepted the situation. The garden issues will be dealt with this autumn.
