Suffolk longhouse dating to 1420, with beams, wood burning stove, swimming pool and wild flower garden, Bungay close by.

This delightful detached holiday home is a fine example of a Suffolk longhouse dating back to 1420 with carved ceiling beams and oak floor boards. The indoor heated swimming pool is private and for guests exclusive use (open between April and the end of October). Set in its own large area of garden with magnificent views over open countryside, the spacious beamed farmhouse, which includes a wood-burning stove in the living room, is the perfect location for a family holiday, a celebration break or a get-together with friends. The property is beautifully secluded and set on a working farm with livestock. Three acres of trout lakes nearby offering fly fishing and abundant wildlife.
The hamlet of St Nicholas South Elmham is steeped in history and surrounded by the beautiful rolling countryside of the Waveney Valley. South Elmham Hall, with its ancient ruined minster and farm café, is reached by footpath. A short drive away is the historic town of Bungay, gateway to the Broads National Park and notable for its wide range of antique shops, restaurants, pubs and other specialist shops; bicycle and canoe hire is also popular. Nearby is St Peter’s Hall with its award-winning independent brewery and restaurant. A little further along the Waveney is the attractive market town and boating centre of Beccles where day boats can be hired to explore the Broads.
The bustling city of Norwich, with its fascinating castle museum and Theatre Royal, is within
40 minutes’ drive. Also within half an hour’s drive is the Suffolk Heritage Coastline with the famous seaside towns of Southwold and Aldeburgh, the RSPB bird reserve at Minsmere and the smaller but equally charming villages of Dunwich and Walberswick. Shops and pub 3 miles.

    Wonderful holiday. 2 families with 5 children in total. The kids spent many happy hours in the pool leaving the grown ups able to completely relax. The excellent trout fishing a short walk away was an added bonus! Lots of lovely walks / cycling from the house. Hosts were really helpful but not intrusive. The setting is delightful and the house is full of character. Thoroughly enjoyable week. Will definitely come again.

    Same as my previous review. Idyllic location. Unbelievably olde house, originally 15century with 16c additions. Fantastic heated pool. Superb grounds. If you want to get away from it, this is the place. Facilities are showing their age a bit. The built in fridge is still not adequate for the size of house, especially as most of the door compartments are broken. We were forewarned so were OK. A fridge freezer instead of the freezer (or just a second fridge) in the utility room would sort that. Other appliances are fine and functional but the dishwasher door handle is broken and fiddly to open. WiFi/broadband speed is Ok given the location (remote). A small irritation was that we found a lot of light bulbs needed replacing. The pool cover is a bit tatty around the edges so needs a lot of care winding and unwinding so as not to damage it more. These minor defects are all that stops it getting a 10.

    Any disappointment in the functionality of the house was outweighed by the stunning location (excepting the proximity to a lot of pig noise and smell). By functionality I mean that several facilities were broken or substandard namely, the dishwasher (which I understand is about to be replaced); The pool heating was not working when we arrived and although an attempt was made to address the problem by placing a steam pipe in the water which we had to turn off before getting in but were advised not to turn back on(the repair was made on the fifth day of our stay because of the bank holiday); The refrigerator (which had been criticised in reviews) was totally inadequate for the number of guests given that the shops were so far away and storage of fresh food therefore an important facility. If the interior shelving of the 'fridge had been intact it would have been easier. It is integral to the kitchen units so may I suggest adding another in the utility room. The fly blinds on the windows, which the owner drew our attention to the necessity of, did not all function. Some of the lighting fitments did not work. However, we all agreed we would stay in a tent to be in such a beautiful location but perhaps we would not have had to pay so much. The biggest plus for us was the general peace of the surroundings, the abundance of wildlife and the glorious weather. I should also mention the generosity of the owners in supplying auxiliary things such as soap, washing up liquid, washing machine supplies, cling film, tinfoil, kitchen roll and toilet rolls and plenty of pool towels as well as bath towels, a homemade cake and a pint of milk. which made things much easier. There was an abundance of crockery and cutlery etc. but thankfully I brought with me the only sharp knife.
