Unique, thatched cottage, heavily beamed, inglenook fireplace and open fires, ideal for couples and larger groups of family.

Once used as a hunting lodge, this 14th/15th-century, heavily beamed, thatched cottage with later additions is now a unique holiday home. Surrounded by open countryside this is a quintessential detached English country cottage. Internally Old High Hall provides spacious well-furnished accommodation with many antiques, and open fires in both the living room and dining room. Outside there is a terrace where guests may enjoy a glass of wine, and two acres of delightful gardens (including two fenced ponds). Old High Hall is perfect for couples or family holidays. The ancient village of Wickhambrook is made up of 11 greens which are believed to date back to Anglo Saxon times. With a village shop and local pubs it provides for everyday needs and is ideally located to explore the surrounding Suffolk towns and villages. Equidistant between the towns of Bury St. Edmunds and Newmarket, 8 miles, visitors can enjoy a day out at the races, a visit to the cathedral and abbey gardens or enjoy a play in the Georgian playhouse built in 1819. Also within easy driving distance are the picturesque villages of Lavenham and Long Melford and the town of Sudbury. There are several National Trust properties in the area including Ickworth House, 6 miles, and Kentwell Hall, 7 miles. Also less than half an hour’s drive is the city of Cambridge with its famous colleges, botanic gardens, museums and galleries. Horse riding and golf nearby. Shop ½ mile, pub 600 yards.

We spend a great bank holiday weekend at Old High Hall and overall I would say everyone had a great time! The best thing was the garden which was just beautiful with all those trees and it has a good size for people to find some alone time and open spaces too, a good mix. The inside living and lounge room are very comfy too especially with the fireplaces and old arm chairs. The bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and comfortable too. The sun lounging chairs outside were also very handy as we had some great weather. The two things which we all decided could do with improvement are the seating arrangements inside and outside. While the inside table looks awesome with those big leather chairs it is very impractical cause they're simply too big and it's hard to maneuver around and get in and out. The outside patio could also do with some proper table and 10 chairs. There is a table and two wooden benches with some extra chairs and an extra table but it's all a bit uneven and mix and match so really, it could be more comfortable with some proper 10 people table and seating. While we liked that there is a pub near by, it would have been extra awesome to have some nicer walking trails around. It's kind of main street walking mostly. We found too foot paths through some fields but nothing too exciting to be honest. So for people who like some little trails or hikes this is not the place. As it's a 14th century house bbqs are also not permitted on the premises. Which makes total sense but wasn't really mentioned properly until I got the welcome documents. Apart from the seating and that the location isn't ideal for nice walks, the cottage was super nice overall. Very close to London and the house keeper Toni was super friendly and helpful. We had a great time overall! Thanks

Response on behalf of the owner. Thank you so much for your kind review and your positive comments. Just to confirm that we have now purchased some further garden furniture for use by guests and we hope that this will make the outdoor seating more comfortable. Extra chairs will also be provided indoors for the dining table and in the meantime, there are numerous chairs around the house, which can be used to supplement the chairs around the dining table. We would also like to make note of the fact that there are many, many beautiful rural and picturesque walks and footpaths in and around Wickhambrook, Dalham (e.g. The Icknield Way), Ickworth Park and numerous other pretty villages nearby. You can find these on line, where there are many helpful links (including Wickhambrook.org) or obtain an ordnance survey map for the area. We ourselves enjoy the walking whenever we are at the property.
