Discover the history behind this delightful thatched barn, which is nestled in a quiet village location with spacious rooms and a large garden.

Satisfy your thirst for history with a holiday at this relic from a bygone age.

There is documented reference to Ratling Barn in 1093 (just 27 years after the Battle of Hastings). At the time it was part of the Manor of Wingham, which was owned by the archbishop of Canterbury and is now a small village nearby. This age-old village was once home to a rope-making community. Ratlines (pronounced Rattlin’s) were small ropes crossing horizontally in a sailing ship’s rigging, which formed rope ladders the crew would use to climb up to the masthead. Ratling Barn most likely served as a workplace for local labourers, where these ropes were made. They would then be sold at Cinque Ports around the Kent coast.

Over half a millennium later came the invention of steam ships, which subsequently lead to the fall in demand for ratlines. The barn was turned to agricultural use, and after undergoing sensitive conversions using traditional methods, this Grade II listed barn is now used for residential use, still retaining many of the original features. The fully-thatched roof that blankets the barn is one of the largest in the UK, and the original oak timber framework still catches the eye around the house.

Picture windows reveal a large copsy garden to the rear, whilst flooding the landing and dining area with natural light. There’s oodles of space in the bedrooms, and the inglenook fireplace that centres the living room invites you to put your feet up, throw another log on the wood burner and unwind in front of the TV.

If you can tear yourself away from the property, attractions nearby are in abundance. The city of Canterbury makes for a history-rich trip, with cobbled streets lined with black and white façades and a beautiful cathedral dominating the skyline. Aficionados of fine food can take a ferry to the continent and dine in the port city of Calais, or alternatively you can enjoy classic rustic British style in one of Kent’s coastal towns, such as Broadstairs or Whitstable.

Ratling Barn is the best English Country cottage we have ever stayed in over 15+ years of using them. A luxurious house, beautifully maintained, extensive equipment, cutlery , crockery, glassware etc, and spotlessly clean

We have been enjoying cottage holidays for twenty years. Ratling Barn was the best so far, for space, equipment and cleanliness. We would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

A superb property, excellent first impression on approach and the inside was just as good. Excellent facilities inside, Wii, music systems, satellite TV. The managers, Sharon and Brian, were Ist class, willingly assisting when the boiler developed a fault, very helpful all round. Our only criticism is there wasn't a walk in shower in the en suite. The family bathroom had one, if there were 8 guests staying and all wanted a shower then it would have meant a bit of a wait. Other than that, a superb property, we would stay again and thoroughly recommend it.
