Right by the mill pond and boasting much character and charm this former mill is the perfect romantic retreat for two.

If you have your hearts set on a romantic getaway in the country, look no further. The Old Mill is a holiday home plucked straight out of a storybook, a dreamy bolthole in the heart of rural Somerset.

The Old Mill is steeped in history. In fact, there’s mention of a watermill on this site in the Domesday Book. More recent history includes the property being used as a studio for a prominent artist – little wonder, as there’s much inspiration to be gained from the compelling landscape, so don’t forget a sketch book and pencil!

The Old Mill still holds firm to its roots with traditional interiors, wooden flooring and chunky wooden beams, whilst providing its guests with contemporary comforts; the standalone bath is sure to revitalise you body and mind, and the kitchen comes fully equipped with all necessary appliances. It’s this blend of tradition with the contemporary that makes this property stand out as a real gem.

However, arguably the property’s greatest feature is its location. Enjoying its own peace and seclusion in a most evocative setting, the property is surrounded on all sides by thick greenery, just above the fairy-tale millpond with its own little rowing boat for two. The garden is teeming with wildlife, and if you’re lucky you might even catch a glimpse of the locals; the heron and the kingfisher that pay a visit to the pond almost every day. The owner, who lives just a stone’s throw away, also has four miniature donkeys and alpacas on site that can be seen from the patio.

There’s a wealth of things to see and do in the region, suitable for holidaymakers of any kind. For some Downton-esque romance, there’s the National Trust-owned stately home Montacute House and Gardens, or Forde Abbey and Gardens. More intrepid visitors are often drawn to the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for fossil hunters, the famous Jurassic Coast is under an hour’s drive.

First floor: Spacious beamed living/dining room with wood-burning stove, wooden floor and well-equipped kitchen area. Shower room with toilet. Steep stairs to second floor: Beamed double bedroom with freestanding bath and wash basin.

  • Wood-burning stove - initial fuel included, thereafter available at cost

  • Bed linen and towels included
  • Freesat TV

Would highly recommend. The surroundings are beautiful for a relaxing holiday. Plenty to do if you want to go out. The host was extremely helpful. The Mill itself was lovely, with everything you need and very picturesque. We had a wonderful time.

We have done self catering almost 40 years, 1979 was our first atempt, the property is 8 out of 10, the location is a 10, if you are looking for a rural retreat you would be hard pushed to find anything better. The host Clementina is lovely and her pooches Puzzle (Completely mad), Widget and Poncho are adorable. Though word of warning if you decide to have a picnic on the lawn keep it away from Puzzle or you may loose it lol. The views are amazing and the sun shone on us all week and with so many activities near by it has the makings of great holiday and so many places to explore. Our top 3 places to explore are The West Somerset Railway, Lyme Regis and Montacute House if you visit this go on the external tour your learn so much about Elizabethan design etc.
