A perfect base from which to explore both the North Yorkshire Moors and the Heritage Coast.

Dating back to the 1700s and affording breathtaking views across the valley, these award-winning former barns simply ooze character. Each of the three holiday cottages has its unique charm and offers a peaceful break away from the rigours of everyday life. Set in the grounds of the owners’ farmhouse B & B, each has its own patio area and the use of a shared adult games room with snooker table (under 16s strictly under adult supervision). There is also a shared indoor heated 18m swimming pool, gym and steam room at this accommodation, available from £100.00 per week, payable locally. Over 11/2 acres of grounds boast secluded sitting-out areas dotted around the duck pond. Ideally located for exploring the North York Moors National Park, the Heritage Coast and the many quaint little villages tucked away in the valleys. A leisurely 8 mile drive brings you to historic Whitby. In the glorious Esk Valley, near the NYM Steam Railway and Heartbeat villages of Grosmont and Goathland. Visit the fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes, the market towns of Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley, or just enjoy the tranquillity of Red House Farm with its cows and free-roaming hens. Very quaint farm building , one of a group converted to holiday cottages. Although there were highlights such as a comfortable bed, interesting and picturesque surroundings and close proximity to Whitby, the cottage was let down by a rather shabby interior and an excess of unnecessary adornments which although being of interest, became obstructions after a few days. These were mainly the hanging pots and pans over the kitchen table on which heads were regularly bumped! The surrounding farm buildings were of interest and the grounds were very well maintained by the hardworking owner. With a little attention to re-decoration and renewal of some of the chairs and sofas this property would merit another star in its ratings. However that may be a little overcritical and providing the weather is fine, this cottage makes a good base-camp for exploring the North Yorkshire moors and surrounding towns and villages.

Response on behalf of the owner; Sorry cottage wasn't exactly to your liking. We have decorated and used items to keep cottage with an atmosphere/ambience that reflects its history and is hopefully comfortable as well. Our previous guest left lovely feedback in the visitors book which shows you can please one person and upset another. The comment on the sofas and chairs is more difficult to understand, as there are 2 sofas and one armchair. The leather Chesterfield and the armchair were new in 2017 (last year). The antique sofa we periodically have recovered, so perhaps that needs inspection and putting on the autumn list. Far too many people say how wonderful to come somewhere original. We prefer traditional styles and so rather than go to a say swedish store, antique sofas we will look at.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; So sorry that you didn't enjoy your winter break in the North York Moors National Park, but especially sorry that you found the cottage at Red House to be cold, and so wish you had mentioned this to us during your visit. We have had winter returnees since 1996 with no problems, and so we feel sure we could have helped with heating controls (or even the wood stove, although that should not have been needed). The pool expense I'm afraid we cannot change. It is a very small contribution to running costs, and at approximately £4.00 per person per day (and available for 12 hours each day) for the use of the pool, gym and steam room, does not seem to us to be expensive. We are sorry you feel it does.
