A perfect bolt-hole for two within the grounds of Thornden Farm, and within easy reach of Eastbourne, and Royal Tunbridge Wells.

A perfect bolt-hole for two within the grounds of Thornden Farm, and within easy reach of Eastbourne, and Royal Tunbridge Wells.

Sympathetically converted, this heavily beamed cottage at Thornden Farm dates back to the 16th century and occupies a truly peaceful and secluded setting amidst 1066 countryside. Within the grounds of Thornden Farm are goats, free range chickens and a small flock of sheep, and from here, there are far-reaching views to Beachy Head, the South Downs and the sea. The cottage boasts an individual seating area in landscaped gardens.

There is a wealth of diverse attractions and activities within the surrounding area. Visit historic Battle, where one may pause for a cream tea and visit the ancient abbey or the fascinating world of Yesteryear, a fun museum of everyday items from days gone by. Hastings is a short drive away offering freshly caught fish from the beaches in the old town, the smugglers cave and many more tourist attractions. Rye, with its cobbled streets, variety of shops and inns such as the famous Mermaid Inn which is known in history as the meeting place for the notorious Hawkhurst smuggling gang, makes a truly wonderful day out. Just a short trip from Ashburnham, one can find expanses of white sand dunes and beaches at Camber, with many other beaches and cliff top walks to be discovered along the entire coast. The Victorian seaside resort of Eastbourne (15 miles), with an indoor swimming-pool, adventure park and new Sovereign Harbour complex, still retains a sense of its opulent past. Royal Tunbridge Wells and the famous Pantiles are 18 miles away. Batemans, the home of Rudyard Kipling, is 5 miles away at Burwash. There are also numerous National Trust and English Heritage sites in the locality.

Activities offered locally include trout fishing (fly only) in Ashburnham, Bewl and Darwell reservoirs. Horse riding, four golf courses plus fantastic cycling and walking. There are many festivals and shows throughout the year, including orchestral nights at Battle Abbey and the castles of Bodium and Hertsmonceaux. Guy Fawkes celebrations in East Sussex are a local tradition, with each area boasting its own Bonfire Society. Within 1½ miles there are two pubs, the ‘Ash Tree Inn’ at Brownbread Street and ‘The Swan Inn’ at Dallington each serve real ales and fine food. Shop 4 miles.

Lovely characterful rustic cottage in a quiet rural location in beautiful countryside. Very comfortable bed and good quality bedding and towels. Cosy log burner. Very friendly and helpful owner (thanks Jenny!). Nice local pubs and convenient for us to visit friends and family locally. Would definitely stay again.

The cottage was small but quite comfortable. Unfortunately when booked it was not clear that the cottage was in fact one of 4 adjoining cottages. Very little privacy outside hence we did not make use of the shared garden area. 20 minute drive to local shop (service station).

We arrived to be treated with rodent bait boxes in the kitchen and mouse droppings under the fridge threadbare towels stained and torn bathroom curtain , chair in lounge that looked like it should have been thrown out years ago and enough food crumbs in between cushions on settee to keep a small army going for a week , the microwave was so rusty inside we felt it wasn't fit to use . In general we felt it was ready for refurbishment and a damn good clean

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thornden Farm is in the rural countryside. Rodents are a part of farm life. We obviously try to keep them to a minimum and outside! Hence when we found mouse droppings in the cottage a bait box was put in. A mouse was caught but to be on the safe side the box was left in just in case he had friends! All the cottages are fitted with electric ultrasonic rodent repellers as a matter of course. In order to find the mouse droppings under the fridge you must have taken off the kickboard and been looking very hard. I apologize the housekeeper hadn’t found them first, and likewise the crumbs down the back of the sofa. I agree the vinyl had come of the chair. That is why it was covered with a lovely throw that WAS pleasing to the eye. I am unsure why you would remove it as you did for your photos. The chair itself is very comfy and serviceable. I am extremely sad and disappointed that you didn’t come and find me on your arrival. I live on the farm. The majority of your complaints could have been rectified and resolved immediately. We always keep a new microwave, kettle etc for breakdowns and situations like this: different towels are really not an issue.
