Enjoying views over the Duddon Valley, this property is surrounded by beautiful gardens with views of Caw and Stickle Fells.

Hugging the great Furness Fells enjoying views over the tranquil Duddon Valley is this gem of a property; a beautifully traditional two bedroom cottage.

This former chapel in the Lakes remains a safe haven even today for holiday goers and their furry companions. The property holds on to its rustic roots with dry-stone walling around the garden, beamed living room and charming wooden décor inside. Ideal for explorers new to the Lake District, some of the best fell walking in Cumbria can be found leading right past the front door. There are many routes and trails nearby, so be you novice or veteran hiker, there’s something for everyone.

Not only is the cottage great for the adventurous type, it’s also a fantastic retreat for those wanting some much needed peace and quiet. The garden flourishes with various floras and with such a tranquil woodland backing the property, your holiday is sure to go undisturbed. And when you do feel like socialising, there’s Ulpha’s shop, a post office and a pub full of warm and welcoming locals but a short walk away.

Chapel cottage was well located for getting to large parts of the Lake District. It was clean and reasonably well equipped. However there were aspects of the cottage which meant we would not go there again or recommend it. The cottage was obviously originally part of the owners’ home and the heating and hot water came from their half of the property. You could only have a shower every other hour. The garden was disappointing. The only seating area was behind the owners’ part of the property and our dog was not allowed there because of the owners’ chickens. Access was difficult and there was only room to park 1 car not 2 as stated in the description of the property.

A lovely cosy cottage with all the mod cons, stunning views, plenty of walks from the front door, and woodpeckers at the feeder. There is a beautiful, very efficient (and easy to use!) wood-burner which was ample against the odd chilly evening. TV supply was through Sky TV, and the TV itself has a spare HDMI socket for a NOW box or laptop if you bring them. WiFi was fine, and certainly worked for streaming TV, but sometimes didn't stretch to other rooms. There is no mobile phone signal in the area. The fell-water to drink is filtered and UV-treated and delicious. Hot water is limited, but sufficient for showers etc. Bags of info supplied (cottage info plus maps, walks, leaflets) and readily offered by owners who are next door. There is a tiny village shop / Post Office a bit of a walk back down the road, with very few supplies (even bread is pot luck), but you could probably survive! Importantly, there was a good supply of Magnum ice creams. There are supermarkets further out (Barrow) if you don't mind driving. Recommended locally: have a swim in the river at Ulpha Bridge, or Devoke Water. Fantastic views if you take a walk up through Low Wood and to the top (old quarry) and beyond. It's a great place to set straight out from hiking, but there are also fantastic locations if you drive out a short way too. Not recommended: the stepping stones (any of them!). Many thanks for an enjoyable stay :)
