This delightful cottage has a fascinating history and is close to the beach in the picturesque Peppercombe Valley, just 3 miles from Clovelly.

Coastguard Cottage 2 is nestled in a secluded woodland in the beautiful Peppercombe Valley, just ¼ mile from the beach. It is one of three, terraced, whitewashed cottages which are steeped in history as this is where the officers lived when policing the wild seas for smugglers, later to evolve into a life-saving Coastguard Service, hence the name.
The cottage has been refurbished with bright and modern interiors but still retains its 19th century character with a large inglenook fireplace and oak floors in the bedrooms. Relax in the lovely garden with a picnic under the leafy canopies listening to the bird song, with butterflies fluttering in the summer months.
Don’t forget your bucket and spade as Peppercombe Beach is nearby with a sandy expanse at low tide. The cobbled village of Clovelly is just 3 miles away and is well worth a visit, as is the lively port town of Bideford, just 4 miles away. Beach ¼ mile. Shop 2½ miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

We were quite disappointed with this holiday in a National Trust cottage. I have just checked the online description again before writing this to make sure it was not my fault I didn't 'get it'. From the picture I thought it was up high on a coast hopefully overlooking the sea or countryside. It was actually set in a deep dark ravine with no view at all and very dark. Access was down a steep unmade up road which made us really concerned for our tyres, suspension etc. Wheels and clutch slipping on the ascent. At the top of this track was a padlocked gate which had to be grappled with on every exit and entry. I really feel this is only suitable for 4x4s, certainly don't attempt it in a sports car or anything else low slung. The property description does not warn you of anything like this. It was only when I had paid the money that I learnt of the access situation and even then it wasn't really spelled out how difficult it was. On a more positive note, the cottage itself was lovely, cosy, well equipped and comfortable. My only negative is that the heating in the bathroom is inadequate. Fortunately the weather was mild. The pub at the top of this mile long access track was a very friendly and welcoming local.
