Coomb Barton oozes old-world charm throughout, in fact the Grange exudes such a strong sense of history, it’s almost tangible.‘There’s no way like the old way’ – Coomb Barton is a true testament to the popular saying. With indoor brickwork, flagstone flooring, black beams, classic furniture and an inglenook fireplace, the scene is perfect for spending quality time with your loved ones. You can gather round beside the fire, open up a bottle of wine and while away your time in conversation, or with a bit of friendly competition at Scrabble or Monopoly. Not too big and not too small, the open-plan living/dining room/kitchen is ideal for bringing people closer together in a warm and cosy environment. There’s so much to do in and around Greenwood Grange Cottages, so a hearty breakfast is a necessity. Thanks to the on-site free-range chickens, golden omelettes or sunny-side-up eggs on toast are your best bet. Afterwards, kiddie-winkies can be kept occupied for hours with the on-site play area, leaving literary enthusiasts free to explore the literary landscape of Hardy’s finest novels, such as Higher Brockhampton (Hardy’s ‘Upper Mellstock’) and Dorchester (Hardy’s ‘Casterbridge’). Pay a visit to the author’s school in Lower Brockhampton or the cottage where he was born and penned some of his early novels. Exploring the tranquil Thorncombe Wood, and property’s 4 acres of grassy pastureland and gardens, it’s easy to see where the author derived much of his inspiration we see in his poems.There are 2 en-tous-cas courts for a spot of tennis in the afternoon, or the lawns are ideal for croquet and badminton. The Roman-style mural that adorns the wall by the indoor pool makes for an extravagant swim, and guests with a passion for fresh produce are permitted to pick their own fruit from the organic vegetable garden. SUPERB INDOOR POOL AND SAUNA COMPLEXSensitively created in old stone to blend with the cottages, Greenwood Grange’s magnificent pool is open daily (7am-10pm) all the year round. For the exclusive use of visitors, it is spectacularly designed in Roman style, with a mural depicting an emperor and his hand-maidens (closed between Jan 7th 2019-1st Feb 2019).
