Force Mill enjoys one of the most picturesque locations in the Eden Valley, which is on the eastern side of Cumbria, on the fringe of the Lake District. The whitewashed, sandstone cottage is positioned right on the beautiful Eden riverbank and overlooks a tumbling weir; this is a truly idyllic location. Force Mill is a delightful, detached, Grade II listed, stone farmhouse which has been completely transformed into an immaculate holiday home. Retaining its original cottage character, its charm is enhanced by beautiful furnishings and modern fittings, including super-fast broadband with a wireless download speed of approximately 30Mb/s.

Eden is a haven for peace, tranquillity and a vast variety of wildlife, perfect for ornithologists and country lovers. It is an outstanding area for walking, whether for a hike on the high open fells or a gentle riverside stroll. Cyclists will love the quiet country lanes and the C2C cycle route. Outdoor activities don’t stop here - why not try canoeing on Ullswater (10 miles), a spot of fishing on the doorstep for trout, salmon and grayling (by prior arrangement with the owners), pony trekking or golf in Penrith (6 miles). There are attractions for the whole family including a cruise on Ullswater, or a ride on a restored railway high in the North Pennines! Surrounded by dramatic landscapes including Ullswater and the north eastern fells, it is also close to both the borders of Scotland and the Yorkshire Dales. This secluded and unspoilt destination will inspire, rejuvenate and refresh visitors at any time of the year. A lively calendar of events adds to a holiday here with festivals of all kinds, country and craft fairs, farmers’ markets, and traditional agricultural shows to name just a few. Shops 3 miles, pub 1 mile.

This is a marmite cottage; you will love it or hate it. The drive through the 2 fields full of sheep and under the railway viaduct is beautiful as is arriving at the cottage. However, we found the significant number of large flies exceedingly unpleasant in the kitchen and the downstairs bathroom. Cooking was horrible as even more appeared. We were told it was because of the weather but if hosts of flies are not your thing I wouldn't risk it in the summer. We tried all manner of solutions to get rid of them which was unpleasant and stressful but always by the next morning there were as many again. If you do go remember to take extra tea towels for this was one of the many places the flies kept returning to. Also, dishwasher tablets as none were provided. All the beds we tried were very uncomfortable as stated in other reviews. We have been told as a result they have purchased toppers but this is too late for us. We found the settee uncomfortable too. As noted in other reviews upstairs is generally tired. The floors and stairs ( on both floors) are uneven which may be difficult for some people. The 'tumbling wier' is so loud you only know a train is going by if you see it for the water blocks all their noise out! You even hear the wier inside with all the doors and windows shut. Many consider the wier peaceful but for those with hearing issues, ASD or other disabilities it could ruin your stay. Due to the flies and sore backs we left early which was such a disappointment as this was our annual holiday.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay as much as you anticipated. The rural location, beside a tumbling weir is very much what the majority of guests particularly enjoy but we take your point that some who are not used to this type of environment may find it too much of a change. In reference to the flies, we did, in common with much of the country, experience an uplift in the numbers of flies during the exceptionally hot weather for a period of just two weeks – not the entire summer. As you know, we personally attended the cottage to put in temporary measures to try and alleviate the fly numbers for you but it now appears you found the nature of the cottage itself not to your liking and these measures could not placate you. We have now installed more robust systems of control however the flies are no longer in evidence to any conspicuous degree now the weather has cooled to a more usual seasonal temperature. We have not experienced this problem in previous years. This cottage originally dates from Tudor times and is 400+ years old. Although it has been modernised several times. we cannot even out the upper floors as one would in a modern house. However, the ground floors are level, although there are some small steps down to the living room. Most people enjoy the charm and character of such a historic cottage but we appreciate some may not hence your Marmite comment presumably and perhaps a more recently constructed house would be more suitable for people with these tastes. We try to provide a level of comfort that suits as many of our guests as possible but we just can’t alter the nature of the cottage itself and the surroundings. Fortunately for us, the feedback over the last twelve years has been almost entirely positive but we constantly look to improve and therefore we thank you for your comments which we will take on board. We do not provide dishwasher tablets, though there may be some left by previous guests on occasion, this is a self catering cottage.

eynesbury/retired couple The location is truly outstanding and the perfect get away from it all holiday retreat, everything we had hoped for and more. Given the location we did not expect amenities to be close by, so low score should be ignored. The drive through a gate and two fields to get to the cottage dodging obstinate sheep was not expected and we’ve had other, lower, cars in the past which would not have made it without damage underneath. The description in the brochure actually understated the cottages attraction but it would have been helpful to know about the inside steps upstairs and downstairs which are irregular and tricky to negotiate. We also agree with others comments that it would be better if the upstairs bathroom had a full shower. The one major negative is the overall lack of comfort, the settee’s but especially the beds. These are without doubt the hardest and most uncomfortable beds we have ever slept on after one night we both had serious pains in backs, hips and knees after a sleepless night. It was only a trip to Dunelm to purchase a couple memory foam toppers which saved the holiday and prevented an early trip home. Having said all that we would come back again, armed with fly fishing rods, a more effective method of killing flies and of course and the toppers!

Response on behalf of the owner; We are sorry you did not find the bed to your liking. We do try and cater for all but it is a case of different strokes for different folks and not everyone likes the same. Rest assured. We will endeavour to make things better for you next time and will provide mattress toppers in the future.

Fabulous location! Away from it all, through 2 fields of sheep and lambs. Watched the heron catch fish. Couldn't be a more peaceful location! House beautiful. Will definitely return.
