"Views towards Bamburgh Castle over harbour and sea – within two miles of Beadnell’s sweeping sands . . ."

With fine views across the little harbour and its working quayside (not Gull’s Crest or Crag End), Farne House Holiday Homes are within a few hundred yards of the shops, restaurants, inns and other amenities of the fishing village and colourful seaside resort of Seahouses. Converted and refurbished to extremely high standards throughout, the properties here are grouped around a central courtyard only yards away from a fine indoor heated swimming pool and sauna (at extra cost and payable direct to the owner). Available between April-October, the pool has a constant depth of 4ft 6in and features a south-facing glass sun living room to one side.
Within easy walking distance, the bustling harbour boasts a fleet of brightly painted fishing cobbles and a few larger boats, and the town itself provides a good range of facilities, including golf, sailing and horse riding. There are calm weather boat trips to the offshore Farne Islands, a wildlife sanctuary for puffins, oyster-catchers, kittywakes, guillemots and grey seals. The 28 islands form a nature reserve owned by the National Trust and, though half of them are submerged at high tide, landing is allowed daily in summer on the largest, Farne Island – where there is a nature trail, lighthouse and 14th-century chapel.
At Beadnell, 2 miles to the south, the dune-backed sands of Beadnell Bay provide ideal conditions for water sports. Formerly an important fishing village and smugglers’ haunt, Beadnell now enjoys a reputation as a centre for sailing and has the unique distinction of being the only East Coast port with a west-facing harbour. The sandy beach running the length of the bay is safe for swimming and is overlooked by 18th-century lime kilns. In the village stands a three-storey, 16th-century peel tower, which now forms part of an inn. Five minutes’ drive to the north of Farne House Holiday Homes stands the mighty fortress of Bamburgh Castle, easily visible across the wide stretch of sand from Seahouses.
Just a few miles further on is yet more historical, natural and scenic interest at Holy Island. Here, the fairytale Lindisfarne Castle was first a 16th-century fort, then a ruin which was redesigned by Edwin Lutyens in 1902 and is now owned by the National Trust.
Inland is a country of massive hills and moors, fast rivers and great forests. Between the Cheviots and the sea, there is easy touring through fields of corn and pastures dotted with solid stone hamlets and lined by dry-stone walls which patchwork the countryside. Shops 500 yards.

Entrance hall (accessed from courtyard or harbour path).

The seven cottages at Farne House enjoy the use of a superb indoor heated swimming-pool provided for the exclusive use of only these cottages. Available April-October and open daily for guests’ use from 8am-8pm, the pool has a constant depth of 1.2m (4ft 6in) and has been designed to the highest specification. It is heated and benefits from the latest purification and de-humidification system. With its sunny, south-facing glassed conservatory lounge to one side, this all-weather facility makes Farne House a fine choice for a Northumberland coastal holiday, whatever the season. There is an additional charge for this and is payable direct to the owner.

The view from the sofa was absolutely beautiful and our children really enjoyed the swimming pool. It was a nice distance from the little town and easy enough to walk with take away without them getting cold!! The cottage/flat needed serious amounts of work doing on it. Four poster bed was really uncomfortable, so hard and lumpy, I slept on pillows! The Oven was so old the writing on the knobs was unreadable so having instructions didn’t help with how to work it. Floor in the kitchen and loo was bubbling and torn. Wall paper peeling. China was chipped. Kitchen drawer front fell off the first time we opened it. Carpet in the bathroom downstairs which is never a good idea. There was a hideous smell that got worse during the week... we finally realised the washing machine was full of stale water (we hadn’t used it). We also had problems with it being too hot and even with the heating off it was still really warm, wondered if it was because we were over the swimming pool. The upstairs bedroom windows leaked when it rained. Car parking was ok after the first day but there wasn’t really room for each apartment to park a car. Dining room table wobbled everytime one of the children lent on it. This was one of the cheapest self catering holidays we had done but we thought this was because it wasn’t in school holiday time. This place had so much potential but we were really very disappointed.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; The cottage was less than 1 mile in distance from the local office address and the majority of the items made reference to could have been rectified with an immediate visit to the property had we been made aware at the beginning of the stay. Regarding the bed this is a subjective matter but if these guests had notified us immediately of their findings, measures would have been taken to rectify the matter with immediate effect. These guests did notify us of the problem with the washer but not until they were actually leaving the property at the end of their stay. When maintenance personnel attended it was found to be an incredibly basic problem which was rectified in minutes. It proved to be a twisted pipe and the rear of the machine. I now address parking which has been the same as advertised since the day the properties were used. There are seven properties and very comfortable parking facilities for 7 vehicles including 4 wheel drives and larger, should all the guests arrive in smaller vehicles, we have accommodated up to 9 vehicles. The 7 apartments are allocated 1 space per unit which is more than adequate. It is perhaps interesting to note up to date in the current season the property has been used by a number of guests all who have been very satisfied.
