Herons Wood at Greyfriars, is a ground floor wing of a Grade II listed stone mansion, dating from 1819, overlooking a 13th century ruined Abbey, which is designated a Site of Special Historical Interest.

With a plethora of original features, including, stone mullion windows, ornate plaster coving, high ceilings, original fireplace with a wood burner, garden with a wood-fired hot tub, and stunning views over the estate Parkland, the property is a fabulous base for exploring the High Weald Area of Natural Beauty, via the many footpaths, by bike or on foot.

In the living room, you will find an original Victorian Gothic fireplace, tall stone mullion windows overlooking Abbey ruins. There is a separate cloakroom with traditional high cistern toilet and basin. The luxurious bedrooms have 5000 pocket sprung cashmere and wool mattresses along with 800 thread count linens. For your comfort, the underfloor heating can be controlled with individual room thermostats. The wood burner in the living room comes with an initial basket of logs, with any further logs available on request at a charge. There will also be a welcome pack of local produce provided.

After a leisurely breakfast, wander five minutes up the road to explore Winchelsea’s cellar tours, 13th century church with stunning stained glass windows, farm shop, pub, and our neighbour, Charles Palmer’s vineyard wine tours. The private garden is a stunning spot to enjoy a glass of wine or spend the evening relaxing in the wood-fired hot tub, or to cook dinner on the BBQ. The property also has a courtyard barn with dog-washing station, boot racks, hanging space for wetsuits, surfboards and wet weather gear (shared with one other holiday lodge.)

2 miles away is the Cinque Port of Rye, spend the day exploring the boutique shops, many restaurants, bars and castle. The Harbour and nature reserve are well worth a visit. Winchelsea beach is a local well-kept secret barely a mile away, and the sand dunes of Camber sands, are a 15-minute drive, and both are dog friendly. Within 45 minutes’ drive are Sissinghurst gardens, Leeds castle, Drusilla’s park, and the stunning Romney Marsh.

For families, on request, a drop side cot bed or travel cot, highchair and steriliser are available. There is a children’s playground a 5-minute walk away, and the private garden is secure.

Upon arrival we were whisked away to a luxurious and relaxing holiday. The accommodation far exceeded our expectations, the quality of all the finishes were exceptional. The grounds and surrounding area is wonderful and must be explored by foot and car, with many wonderful places to discovered. We loved our walks down to Winchelsea beach with a cheeky coffee and cake at the cafe. We enjoyed nothing more than a leisurely soak in the hot tub at the end of the day to soothe our aching feet before retiring for the night in the most comfortable bed for an amazing nights slumber, to wake up, opening our bedroom curtains onto a 13th century monastery, wonderful. Caroline was very friendly and made us feel very welcome. Our only complaint was that we couldn’t stay another week.
