Experience Victorian opulence and grandeur in this Grade II* listed manor house, childhood home of the world-renowned Lady with the Lamp, Florence Nightingale.

Blissfully set in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside surrounded by green pastures and charming little parishes, Lea Hall is a luxury holiday home plucked straight from the pages of history. This Grade II* listed, part 17th, part 18th-century property is a traditional manor house with a beautiful Georgian façade, that has been lovingly restored to its former glory. Originally an Elizabethan manor, the older part of the hall has been fully furnished with period pieces and a keen eye for detail. With crystal chandeliers and open fires, portrait paintings and a grand staircase, it’s a veritable window into the past. The rest of the house seamlessly blends this traditional ambience with contemporary luxuries – all 10 bedrooms feature their own en-suite, there are twelve TVs, wood burners and 4 acres of landscaped gardens with some impressive water features.

Needless to say, the manor house is a true gem of a property. But the real treasure to staying in this country abode is in its heritage. Turn back the clock some 200 years, and you’ll have likely come face to face with one of the most iconic female figures of the 19th century, Florence Nightingale.

The distinguished nurse lived at Lea Hall during her childhood years, which was owned by her grandfather, Peter Nightingale. Florence became a beacon of hope during the Crimean War due to her tireless and unrelenting care and attention she paid to the sick and wounded throughout the night, from which came the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp”. A symbol of selflessness and cited as the ‘founder of modern nursing’, Florence Nightingale’s impact on medicine and the nursing profession is recognised worldwide even today. Lea Hall now stands as testament to the owner’s painstaking 18-month long restoration project that saw the property transformed into exemplary holiday accommodation. Ideal for wedding and other milestone celebrations, guests can live like a Victorian aristocrat, far from the troubles of your draining day-to-day concerns.

The whole area surrounding Lea Hall is steeped in history. The parish of Dethick, Lea and Holloway is recorded in the Domesday Book as Lede, and the notorious Babington Plot of 1586 was schemed at Dethick. Today, the peaceful village of Lea offers visitors friendly pubs, tea rooms, restaurants and the famous John Smedley factory. Rural Derbyshire is a real treasure trove offering everything for the visitor including country houses, historic halls, medieval ruins, heritage railways, cycleways, beautiful unspoilt countryside and pretty villages. One of the closest attractions to Lea Hall is the Heights of Abraham. Built on the site of historic lead mining, the hilltop park is approached by cable car, which rises up and offers some spectacular views of the Derwent Valley and the surrounding Peak District. Visitors can tour the network of caverns and passageways left behind and explore the 60 acres of woodland hillside and buy souvenirs at the gift shop. Alternatively, for those who appreciate stately homes and gardens, magnificent Chatsworth House (3½ miles from Bakewell) is highly recommended, as well as Haddon Hall and Lyme Park, all of which have been film or TV locations over the years.
