Lock Cottage is situated in a picturesque setting adjacent to the lock and canal. The cottage dates from 1865 when it was a lengthsman or lock-keepers cottage for the top lock of the Kennet and Avon Canal. The lengthsmen were responsible for lengths of the towpath and in the absence of a lock-keeper, for locks and surroundings which included the water levels and control of weirs. They were also responsible for the maintenance of banks on their length of canal, including cutting reeds and vegetation. The cottage still retains some of its original features including exposed beams and open fire places.
This is a perfect base for exploring Marlborough and all the nearby National Trust land that surrounds the area. Lock Cottage has a large enclosed garden, fantastic for children or dogs, and you even have your own woodland to venture through. This is a great place to unwind and relax, and to just enjoy the delights of this part Wiltshire has to offer. Fishing is also available nearby. Shop 2 miles, pub ½ mile and restaurant 4 miles.

We did enjoy our time at Lock Cottage and it was a nicely furnished and comfortable place to return to after exploring the local area. It was only a short drive to a local Tesco for papers etc and our dogs absolutely loved running free in the Savernake Forest. The enclosed garden was fine but included a stream/ditch which the dogs had to be kept out of. The fixtures and fittings and décor were all a bit 'tired' and the property description is wrong in that there was no microwave and no shower in the main bathroom.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Hi Ben, glad you enjoyed your stay at the cottage. The description should not have said we have a microwave, as we have never had one at the cottage and do not plan to put one in. I believe this has now been removed from the description at our request. The shower description does say it’s an over the bath shower. We can’t do much about the stream running through the garden which is part of the cottage charm, but appreciate it’s difficult to keep the dogs out, but we do provide dog towels. The furniture is mostly antique, so we can’t do much about it, if it’s tired, it because some of it is almost as old as the cottage... but we are having extensive redecoration in July.

A lovely character cottage in a great location by the canal & ideally situated for the countryside, local towns & historical sites. Overall we had a lovely relaxing holiday but cottage along with bed linen & towels could have been cleaner. More curtains e.g. second window in main bedroom would be useful, along with a microwave & greater volume of bowls & plates so you have some when the dishwasher is in use. Property description should probably also advise that water in the cottage is from a spring rather than mains water.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thanks for your review. We have added some more china to the kitchen. There is no curtain against the second window in the bedroom but there is privacy screening. If you had any issues with the cleanliness of the cottage, or the linen, then you should have called and we could have put this right for you. If your referring to the bath, the marks are due to the iron content in the water something that is outside of our control.

A lovely location with good local pub. The cottage is sweet and kept very clean. Kitchen had everything we needed including sharp knives, which I have never had in a holiday cottage before! Very good garden for a dog. Was good for our needs.
