Unique, thatched cottage, heavily beamed, inglenook fireplace and open fires, ideal for couples and larger groups of family.

Once used as a hunting lodge, this 14th/15th-century, heavily beamed, thatched cottage with later additions is now a unique holiday home. Surrounded by open countryside this is a quintessential detached English country cottage. Internally Old High Hall provides spacious well-furnished accommodation with many antiques, and open fires in both the living room and dining room. Outside there is a terrace where guests may enjoy a glass of wine, and two acres of delightful gardens (including two fenced ponds). Old High Hall is perfect for couples or family holidays. The ancient village of Wickhambrook is made up of 11 greens which are believed to date back to Anglo Saxon times. With a village shop and local pubs it provides for everyday needs and is ideally located to explore the surrounding Suffolk towns and villages. Equidistant between the towns of Bury St. Edmunds and Newmarket, 8 miles, visitors can enjoy a day out at the races, a visit to the cathedral and abbey gardens or enjoy a play in the Georgian playhouse built in 1819. Also within easy driving distance are the picturesque villages of Lavenham and Long Melford and the town of Sudbury. There are several National Trust properties in the area including Ickworth House, 6 miles, and Kentwell Hall, 7 miles. Also less than half an hour’s drive is the city of Cambridge with its famous colleges, botanic gardens, museums and galleries. Horse riding and golf nearby. Shop ½ mile, pub 600 yards.

A wonderful cottage for a large gathering. However, the cleanliness was not up to standard. Bed sheets were not clean. The carpet needed vacuuming, there was dust on the skirting boards. Bins had not been emptied and there were no spare bin bags. It was disappointing considering that the cottage had a lovely atmosphere.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your kind review of the cottage and we are so glad that you enjoyed the wonderful atmosphere. We would however just like to confirm that all the bed linens and towels are washed and ironed and beds freshly made prior to each new arrival by our housekeeper and the house is thoroughly cleaned and vacuumed by her on a weekly basis and prior to each arrival. Please appreciate that this is a very old property full of oak beams, nooks and crannies and thatch!

Bathrooms generally need an update and replace the bathroom carpets with a more applicable floor covering. However, overall an enjoyable stay in period property.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your kind review of the house and we are so glad that you enjoyed your stay. We would like to say that we try to maintain an old world feel to this very old but modernised period house dating back to the 14th Century, which is why we have bathrooms with very dear period style brass and porcelain sanitary ware, which is in keeping with the period style of the house. As regards the floors, please note that there are 4 bathrooms, 2 of which have wooden or wood style flooring and 2 of which currently have the en suite carpet, although we are already considering changing the latter and thank you for your kind suggestion. It is sadly not possible to tile the bathroom floors due to the uneven surfaces of the old flooring, given the age of the house.
