The Old Mill House is the most delightful family house. In a beautiful setting in the Taw Valley, off a country lane in a wooded valley, and with a stunning river nearby. You will be captivated from the moment you arrive, the warm and welcoming living room, has tiled floor, and the comfortable sofas are just waiting for you to put your feet up of an evening. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor, both with exposed stone feature wall, and the double has a luxurious 5ft bed and en-suite shower room.
The quirky layout means that the first floor has an open plan kitchen/dining room with additional seating area and wooden floor. The kitchen is well-equipped with two windows letting light flood in, and you’ll need the large farmhouse table to unpack the excellent welcome pack. The terrace with views across to the Tarka Line, is excellent for breakfast, while summer afternoons can be spent enjoying the sun in the beautiful garden. The nearby river offers trout and salmon fishing by arrangement, or you can just stroll along its banks. Places of interest to visit in the area include Dartington Crystal, Barnstaple and Woolacombe.

We stayed a week at The Old Mill - the house and gardens are lovely - we didn’t realise quite how remote it is though. You can’t walk to the pub or shop as the road is far too dangerous. A single track road with no pathway or lighting. The issues we had in the actual house were to do with comfort / I feel investment is needed with the beds and upstairs sofa. Incredibly uncomfortable mattresses in the main bedroom - springs digging in everywhere. Felt as if we were on a trampoline! I actually slept in all the beds to trial them - the 2 single beds had sheets directly into the mattresses ( no mattress cover or topper!) - not nice, not hygienic. The double bed upstairs has seen better days - a very soft saggy mattress. Painful back in the morning ( our daughter also said the same). The sofa upstairs desperately needs changing - thin cushions, no support - has seen better days - and as the main daily room - the seating is needed. Curtains in the main bedroom need attention - 3 hooks to hold the whole curtain up! All these issues may sound trivial - but when you can’t sleep comfortably - they become huge issues. Investment is needed - until then - I don’t think I could/would recommend this place.
