Old School on the River Coquet is exactly what its name suggests, and the tranquillity, views and its quirky interior all make for a super holiday or short break. Just a 2-minute walk from the village centre, this historic, Grade II listed, 17th-century, stone, former school house once served the children of the entire village. Built in 1824, this property enjoys beautiful views of the River Coquet towards the wooded embankment, where wildlife and birdlife can be spotted. French doors lead onto the terrace with seating, where you can sit in peace and listen to the tinkling of the river. Inside, you will find a light and airy space with high ceilings, and a minstrels’ gallery adds to the charm and quirkiness of the property, along with other features which have been retained.
Warkworth is a ‘picture postcard’ village with a hillside castle sitting at the top of the street. It has one of the oldest churches in the area, which is set in the centre of the small square, and its cafés and pubs have excellent reputations, with locals frequenting them as often as visitors. The bespoke shops in the village ensure there is something to treasure to take home as a reminder of your stay in Warkworth.
Nearby Amble has a thriving Sunday market set on the harbour, some larger shops and further amenities, as well as pretty beach huts that can be hired for a modest sum. Alnwick Castle is only a few minutes’ drive and a visit to The Alnwick Garden should not be missed. You can follow the coastal road from Warkworth and visit the friendly villages of Craster, famed for its kippers; Embleton with its beautiful romantic bay; Newton-by-the-Sea, with a microbrewery near the beach; Beadnell, which is an ideal place for water sports, and Seahouses which is a traditional seaside town. The train station at Alnmouth is only 3 miles away, where you can hop on a train to Edinburgh or Newcastle for a lovely day out. Beach 1 mile. Shop 350 yards, pub and restaurant 175 yards.
