Set in a scenic quaint hamlet, this charming property provides an ideal base for a family wanting to explore this gorgeous area of West Sussex.

This charming, 18th-century holiday cottage enjoys an enviable location set along an extremely quiet no-through country lane in the scenic quaint hamlet of Burpham, close to Arundel. Due to the village being set on a no-through road, on most nights, once the nearby pub has closed, not a single car goes by until the next morning. Attached to the owner’s property and tastefully styled throughout, Pensway has character features such as beams, a multi-fuel burner and slate tiled floors, and offers many facilities and amenities for guests comfort. The enclosed garden is a particular delight with pretty shrubs, flowers and borders – an ideal spot for al fresco dining!
Burpham is in the heart of the South Downs, and the property is a 30-minute walk from the South Downs Way; a favourite with walkers. Burpham has a well-known, 18th-century pub serving food, which has been awarded with an AA award, only 220 yards from Pensway. There are many scenic footpaths close by, as well as a Saxon church. Discover the Iron Age and Neolithic remains and the century old cricket pitch. There are literary links to the area, Mervyn Peake and John Cowper Powys both resided here in previous times. Arundel is about 3 miles away with its historic castle, cathedral and streets lined with tea rooms, boutiques, sweet shops, pubs, restaurants, art galleries and antique and book shops.
With families in mind, there is also an outdoor public lido swimming pool, children’s play area, crazy/mini golf, all weather floodlit tennis courts and boat trips. Enjoy wonderful riverside walks locally, the River Arun winds its way around the town and is a magnet for wildlife, with The Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre attracting some of the worlds most spectacular birds. There are various seaside resorts nearby, including Climping Beach, only a 10-minute drive, or slightly further, Worthing, Bognor, Elmer or Littlehampton. Bustling Brighton is within a 20-minute drive with the ornate Royal Pavilion. Visit Chichester with its cathedral, theatre, Goodwood or Fontwell racing. Also within easy driving distance discover the various National Trust homes and gardens including Parham House, Amberley Museum, West Dean Gardens, Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, Petworth House and Amberley Brook.
Golf, sailing, surfing, riding and cycling can all be enjoyed nearby. Beach 7 miles. Shop 3 miles, pub and restaurant 220 yards.

We chose Pensway because of its proximity to Arundel and because of The George pub nearby. We know the area very well, so we're aware that there aren't any other 'facilities' in the village. The cottage does have one off road car parking space, a small car port, which would not be suitable for a larger car. The cottage had almost everything one might need, although I did notice there was no DVD player. Curiously, what I imagine is a small boxroom/third bedroom is locked and out of use for guests, likewise the cupboard under the stairs. The bathroom is very small but well-presented, but a second toilet would have been appreciated as there were four adults in our party. During our visit we experienced an exceptionally bad thunderstorm which resulted in a leak in the dining room and another on the landing, both of which required bowls to collect the water. The power tripped out but we located the fuse box and were able to reset it. Somewhere to hang wet coats would have been useful. The very best features of the cottage were the oak framed dining room with a dining table to linger over, which lead out into a lovely secluded and well-stocked cottage garden. The suntrap patio area was perfect for al fresco breakfasts and evening drinks, whilst another seating area nearby offered a more shady option. The oriental artefacts dotted around were very interesting and admired. Overall, we were very happy with our stay and would consider a return visit.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; I am pleased that you found many aspects of your stay at Pensway satisfactory and that you have kindly provided a positive overall review score. I am sorry nevertheless that aspects were not up to your expectations. The house is indeed a small cottage, reflected in the limited parking and single toilet facilities, but feedback we have received from visitors have been positive about the quality of the decorations and facilities, reflecting the fact that the house is not only holiday accommodation but also a family home for some of the year. The Smart TV does in fact have an integral DVD player; instructions for the use of which are included in the TV instructions. Thank you for the appreciation of the oriental artefacts - these are various family inheritances and holiday purchases.

Fabulous home in a wonderfully tranquil setting. So many lovely walks from the doorstop through the South Downs. The garden is as lovely as ever, although a little cool to enjoy this stay. The George is a great pub for drinks and dinner, and 2 minutes from the cottage. Maya, the local property manager, is very helpful. The perfect choice for a relaxing break.
