For the outdoor enthusiasts, Reeth is perfect for enjoying anything outdoors. The wild, rugged and varied scenery provides miles of walks, with low-level, gentle strolls along the river, and more challenging walks with high mountains and valleys lined with streams. There are endless footpaths where you can enjoy spectacular scenery. The owners can also provide you with many Ordnance Survey maps. The area is increasingly popular with cyclists and there are many bridleways too. The ‘Swale Trail’ runs from nearby Grinton to Keld and is ideal for families. The Dales Bike Centre is just down the road at Grinton which offers cycle hire, and they also have an excellent café where you can enjoy a piece of cake before setting off on your ride. The cottage is within easy strolling distance of a selection of pubs and restaurants, so no need to go far – a perfect way to relax after an adventurous day and enjoy good local ales and traditional food.
The historic town of Richmond, famous for its castle, Georgian theatre and abundance of individual shops and tea rooms, is around 30 minutes’ drive. In the opposite direction is Barnard Castle, which can also be reached in 30 minutes, and has a market, cafés, antique shops and the famous Bowes Museum. The Forbidden Corner in Middleham is 13 miles away in Wensleydale, and is hugely popular with families. It is a quirky venue with its labyrinth of caves, folly and underground caverns. Picturesque Aysgarth Falls and Castle Bolton are en-route with many other pretty picture postcard villages as you pass through. Shop, pub and restaurant 100 yards.
