Enjoying an elevated position with views over lush green pastureland and the navy-blue sea, Lodge Cottage is a true gem of a cottage by the coast. You’re sure to be overcome by a nostalgic feel upon arrival, as every detail has been considered as only a grandmother knows how. In fact, after a short stay at this charming property, it’ll come as little surprise to you to learn that the owner of the Scalby Lodge collection is none other than Her Majesty the Queen, in Right of her Duchy of Lancaster. Comfortably sleeping families of 4, this classic cottage provides something for everyone – there’s a children’s play area outside and a well-equipped games room if the weather decides to turn. The living room area is set around a brick Inglenook feature fireplace, complete with large wooden lintel over a crackling wood burner. The property is immaculately kept to suit the ‘country abode’ vibe, yet all contemporary appliances are accounted for. The grounds are truly a feast for the senses; you can amble through the nearby wildflower meadow whilst tasting that salty sea air on your tongue. As Lodge Cottage is sandwiched between the North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Heritage Coast, the property boasts easy access to a variety of stunning natural landscapes. For keen birdwatchers, the RSPB Bempton Cliffs Bird Sanctuary should be the first port of call. The chalky cliffs are home to some 250000 sea birds including puffins, razorbills and guillemots. Scarborough boasts a wealth of attractions and activities, such as the theatre (Europe’s largest open-air theatre, which has hosted world-renowned acts including Elton John and Katherine Jenkins), two beaches at North and South Bay, the esplanade (which featured in the TV show The Royals and Heartbeat) and the imposing Scarborough Castle, standing watch from atop a promontory overlooking the North Sea. The heather-clad hills of the North York Moors are a paradise for walkers and cyclists. You can take a scenic ride on a steam railway from Pickering to Whitby, a historic port town that straddles the mouth of the River Esk. It’s also the birthplace of Dracula, Bram Stoker’s literary eponymous vampire, and an ideal spot to grab some lunch - fish ‘n’ chips anyone? Other highlights nearby include the ancient cathedral city of York and the shopping hub that is Leeds.
