There is a lot to like about Stewner Bank Cottage but we had a number of issues. Our friends arrived first, at the time agreed, but the cottage was not ready and the owner was not particularly welcoming neither did she not pop back during our weeks stay to check that everything was OK. Three bedrooms all with en-suites is great but no heated towel rails, no hair drier, two of the tinniest wash basins I have ever seen and, in the master, nowhere to put everyday toiletries plus both the towel rail and shower were hanging from the wall. Additionally the towels provided would not absorb water and therefore not dry. (Washed using fabric softener?) We also had issues with the underfloor heating for which there were no controls and which we found did not adequately heat the rooms. Returning from walks we had no means of drying wet clothing other than using the coal-effect gas fire in the living room - a far from ideal solution. With three other shower rooms the large ground floor wet room might be considered over-generous, perhaps it could be altered to provide a downstairs cloaks and a drying facility. On the plus side the kitchen was large and very well equipped and the welcome pack very generous. The location is lovely for those who want country views and walks from the doorstep. With the exception of the master en-suite everything was of a good standard and in good condition. It could be so nice but we found too many 'niggles'.

This was our second visit to Stewner Bank Cottage. We really like this part of Cumbria as it has the benefit of being near some great coastline while the Lakes (eg. Coniston and Windermere) are only around 30 minutes away. As ever, everything was to our satisfaction in the cottage and we had a relaxing week, despite the best efforts of the weather! Even better this time around was the excellent 4G phone coverage that is now in place; great for those people (grandkids) who have to have internet access.
