Walking trails from the doorstep, historic houses and the city of York are within easy reach of Sunny Cottage.

Dating from the 1700s and situated in the heart of the village of Welburn in the picturesque Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this charming stone-built, detached cottage has been carefully renovated, and cleverly combines contemporary fixtures and fittings with a traditional period charm. The secluded garden benefits from a York stone flagged terrace, outdoor seating and a Victorian summerhouse. The renowned village inn stands just a few yards from the cottage and there is a highly regarded village shop/bakery and café. The stately home of Castle Howard is just a 5-minute drive away, a magnificent Baroque mansion, known to many as ‘Brideshead Revisited’, with woodland and lakeside walks, an interesting programme of events, including a Christmas experience like no other starting from mid November until the New Year, restaurant and an excellent farm shop. Numerous walking trails lead from the doorstep and more can be found in the North Yorkshire Moors and by venturing east to the little-known gem of the Yorkshire Wolds. Excellent mountain biking is available at nearby Dalby Forest and Sutton Bank Trail centres. Discover Malton, 5 miles, ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’ with its popular food festival and myriad artisan producers, and take a trip aboard the famous steam train from Pickering to the fishing port of Whitby. Enjoy the traditional seaside resorts of Scarborough and Filey, and the quaint fishing villages of Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes, or you can visit abbey ruins at Rievaulx, Byland and Kirkham Priory. National Trust houses can be found at Nunnington and Beningbrough, and the surrounding area offers numerous gastro pubs and restaurants. The ancient walled city of York is easily accessible, 14 miles, and appeals to all ages at any time of year with its exquisite architecture, iconic minster, museums, theatres and abundance of festivals including the renown Viking Festival during the month of February. With so much to do, so many places to explore and so many experiences to enjoy Sunny Cottage provides high quality accommodation throughout the full year. Shop 1 mile, pub and restaurant 350 yards.

Great spot for our holiday. A well appointed cottage in a great village location. The children loved playing in the garden. Only slight thing is we wished the sofa was more relaxed but that’s just personal preference.

Beautiful cottage with everything you could need. The kitchen is very well equipped with good quality utensils, freezer and washing machine is in the shed. Lovely garden (with some steps) which is fully enclosed and secure which was perfect for our Cocker Spaniel. Excellent location for exploring North Yorkshire and the Moors, pretty villages, York, Steam Railway, the coast and Rievaulx Abbey, Castle Howard is a 5 minute drive though you can walk across the fields and has a good farm shop. Pub a couple of minutes walk with good food, no village shop but there is a cafe, shops approx 20 mins. Would definitely stay again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your lovely review recommending Sunny Cottage. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. Thanks also for commenting on the quality of the kitchen utensils; when setting up the cottage we have tried to provide good quality items that we already have in our own home and so know they work well or that we would want to use ourselves. The enclosed garden, is indeed, great for anyone staying with a dog or for children playing outside. Do come and stay again.

Great spacious cottage, incredibly well equiped with everything you could wish for. Comfortable beds, complete kitchen with all the pots, pans and utensils you need. Washing machine and freezer in shed. Good instructions for all appliances and even tips for walking routes and things to see in the area. Couple of minutes walk to pub and very good coffeeshop/lunchroom. Easy to find and very centrally located, York 20 minutes, Scarborough 45 mins, Castle Howard walking distance. Nearest supermarket in Malton, about 10km. There is no village shop, but the farmshop at Castle Howard has some very good food. The low doorways on the ground floor took a few bumps to get used to, after that no problem. If I must come up with one complaint, it's that the fridge doesn't have a freezer compartment, so every ice cube requires a trip to the shed. Very minor problem. The owners were very friendly and even dropped by to say goodbye on our last day. This is an ideal property when you're visiting North Yorkshire.

Excellent place to stay and visit. Lots to do locally and a great farm shop at Castle Howard. Only slight disappointment was a lack of BBQ or outside table. But really struggling for anything else. Would stay again.

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Sunny Cottage. The sudden fine spring weather caught us by surprise and we hadn’t moved the outside table from its winter storage onto the patio area in time for your stay. We didn’t expect it to be so warm. Many thanks for your kind review - do come and stay again and bring the fine weather with you.
