This beautifully presented thatched cottage is the perfect location for a quiet break away.

Built in the 17th century, Thatched Cottage boasts oodles of character and charm with original features kept, including beams (some of which are low), a wood burner set in an inglenook with a bread oven, and an Aga that provides all the hot water. Set within 1066 country, this detached cottage resides in the owner’s grounds, and is situated in a small hamlet, with direct road access to the delightful market town of Battle. Battle will be every history enthusiast’s dream, as this was where William Duke of Normandy and the Saxon King Harold fought with their bows and arrows and changed the course of English history. The grounds back onto Normanhurst Forest which provides an array of wildlife spotting opportunities, including foxes and badgers which coexist with the owner’s two goats, chickens and parrots. Opportunities for walking, riding and fishing are all on the doorstep. Once guests have explored the tea rooms, antique shops and galleries in Battle, head towards Hastings and then on to the beach where you can purchase freshly caught fish from the boats. The Cinque Port Town of Rye is slightly further afield, where guests will find miles of golden sand dunes at Camber. In the other direction visit the Science Centre at Herstmonceux. Alternatively, beautiful gardens can be seen at Great Dixter and Pashley Manor. Burwash will reveal Rudyard Kipling’s Home at Bateman’s (National Trust), and castles can be explored at Bodiam and Leeds. Good rail services to London from Battle station. Beach 3 miles. Shop 2 miles, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

Leo and Kate are lovely but the Cottage is very close to a busy B road into Battle and the traffic can be heard, particularly in the bedrooms. The Cottage is very old and has quite a few low beams - anyone over 5’ 8” would struggle not to hit their head!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback, we value all comments, however, we are very disappointed at such a low score, in fact the lowest we’ve ever had in 10 years trading. Booking a grade 2 listed thatched cottage, circa 1649, a building of historical interest, one would expect low beams, that we cannot or would not change. They are also accurately depicted in the photos on the website and they clearly show the style and it's many original features. Many of our existing and returning customers are in excess of 6” tall. People book to stay at historical buildings for the unique experience of stepping back in time. It is unfortunate that these guests booked the wrong cottage.

A wonderful quintessential thatched cottage. Very well equipped kitchen, comfy beds, sweet bathroom with plenty of towels and bath robes. Lovely Woodburner making the sitting/dining room a wonderful relaxing space. Large garden with outside seating, though I visited at Christmas so a little cold to appreciate it! Leo and Kate are very kind and generous hosts.
