Awash with maritime history and smuggling connections, The Captain’s House overlooks a lighthouse and is close to Poldark Country.

The Captain’s House has been sensitively restored keeping as much of its original character as possible including the original fireplaces (with their naval anchor logos), and the many nautical artefacts that reflect its history and the personalities of its earlier residents. It lies at the northern end of the terraced cottages overlooking the lighthouse, and has a large granite cellar under the stairs as well as a lower bathroom (unfortunately not now accessible for safety reasons) which was used for storing the more valuable items taken from wrecks, weapons, general supplies and, of course, rum. Until only a generation ago, the inhabitants of these cottages were the toughest of men with a very dangerous occupation steeped in hazard and had a tradition of courage. Most of them entered the Coastguards from the Royal Navy and, to this day, the first postings for the period 1819-1866 can be traced in the Parish. Certain of them are remembered to this day. George Henry Sheppard is typical - he led his men during the rescue of the crew from the steamer SS Oria, stranded off Pendeen in heavy seas. George, reportedly a strong, stout man, died later of his injuries in this cottage. Another resident of great character was Capt. Anderson, who helped with salvage on HMS Anson wrecked off the Loe Bar in a severe storm, with huge loss of life (see above). Yet another, Captain Hitchens, a fascinating personality, is still talked about in the village. Some of the nautical artefacts displayed in the cottage were recovered from local shipwrecks in the 1960s by the current owner, a former Royal Navy SAR-diver. Other artefacts were recovered by some of his family from other wrecks in the early part of the 20th century.
