Originally built in 1825 as a ruin, this unique Grade II listed building has been sympathetically transformed into two lovely, detached gatehouses yet retaining all the visual appearances of a ruin. Built in stone from Filey Brigg, The Follies are set in 3/4 acres of natural grounds and visitors are welcome to wander through them, where there is an abundance of wildlife including, rabbits, owls and squirrels.
Centrally located for exploring the North Yorkshire coast, moors and wolds, the historic town of Filey is only 3 miles distant, with its wide sandy beach and all the attractions of a popular seaside resort. Scarborough and Bridlington are both easily accessible, as is the beautiful city of York. There is a 9-hole golf course locally, fishing available nearby, and an RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs providing interest for bird-watchers. There are plenty of local shops and pubs within walking distance, and good railway links. Shop 500 yards.

Cosy living room with rug on stone floor, Gothic arched windows and insets in walls, vaulted ceiling and original Gothic archway leading to grounds. Well-equipped fitted kitchen/dining room with stone floor. Bathroom with shower over whirlpool bath and toilet. First floor: Minstrel gallery double bedroom with standard 4ft 6in double bed and sloping ceiling with restricted head room from foot of bed.

To all those looking to stay at the Follies you must take note that it’s not properly stipulated in the description in regards to the true layout of this cottage. If you suffer with a bad back or weak joints then avoid this place at all costs. What it clearly does not state is that the bedroom ceiling is so sharply vaulted you cannot stand up and walk normally around the bed to access the wardrobe or dressing table, you must either double yourself up and walk like a cripple or if your very tall like me you must go around the bedroom on your hands and knees!!! The plus side is if you do sustain an injury the bed is comfortable for to pass out on. You must also not be kidded in believing that York is easily accessible, on a good clear road you can get there in an hour. However the A64 goes down to one lane on many occasions so you will find your journey thwarted with traffic and as such the “easily accessible” York is about 2 hours to get too. I choose this place because it appeared to be idyllic and quirky not to mention the many stars other people have given it, all I can say is these other high starred comments are clearly from people who naturally live in hovels, I have stated in true 4 and 5 star cottages and this is not one of them. Also if you require wi-fi then you will be spending a great deal of time wandering the gardens and grounds as the signal comes from the owners house and does not penetrate into the cottage as the walls are so thick. That also goes for network signal, great if you want to lose all access to the rest of the world but useless otherwise. From the pictures you would be led to believe that you are in a rural paradise, what you are getting is a cottage that is directly on the main road through the town and you do not get the peace and tranquility you may be looking for with the regular hum or traffic passing by your windows. Otherwise the bed is comfortable and the shower has acceptable water pressure but that’s it!! It became so uncomfortable that we left a day earlier then intended and when we informed the owner of our early departure she neither looked surprised or even enquired as to why we were leaving, clearly didn’t care or was interested. To all those who choose to stay here and ignore my comments I wish you all the best with your head injuries from that vile bedroom ceiling. Also if your taking a dog, just be warned there is no welcome pack for your four legged friend and they stipulate that dogs are not to be left unattended in the cottage or to access upstairs or sit on the furniture unless you clear up after the fur and prints they may leave in their wake. Best of luck!!!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your review. I’m saddened that you would insult my past and present guests. The lodge is situated in Hunmanby Village and we are very fortunate to live near the thriving town of Filey, which makes for busy periods on the east coast. York is 42 miles by car and again can take anything from 40 minutes onwards depending on traffic. The lodges are my heart and soul they’ve been blood sweat and many tears, I feel between English Country Cottages and I it’s fairly advertised and priced for the area. The welcome pack is complimentary and I apologise if you’d rather have had doggy treats than the wine and chocolates you had. Dogs are not allowed on the lodge’s furniture or upstairs hence the gate provided to make it more pleasurable for other guests whom don’t wish to smell other dogs / don’t have them. I will never allow dogs to be left unattended in a strange place this is my choice. The lodge is unsuitable for the infirm or disabled, and I can assure you I’ve spent over the years’ time and money trying to persuade the council to let us raise the roof at one side by a meter. We make the best of the little old place. This property is not advertised with WIFI, Low Lodge opposite has the router for the WIFI, and my home 100 yards up the drive does not have WIFI. I’d like to apologies if I came across uninterested when you left, your husband explained you had to leave a day early and there was no issues with the cottage. That seemed very reasonable to me. The wet weather never helps when you’re on holiday. I’d like to thank all my past guests over the 17 years whom have enjoyed the quirky old place and the glorious rugged coast line we live on and leave the lodges clean and tidy - I appreciate your custom and your company greatly. Vicky.
