This exceptional converted Granary barn with fantastic living space and contemporary flare offers family parties the perfect retreat to explore the heart of York.

This exceptional converted Granary barn with fantastic living space and contemporary flare offers family parties the perfect retreat to explore the heart of York.

The Granary is a stunning barn conversion set on a working arable farm within unspoilt, idyllic open countryside in the heart of a 3,000 acre private estate. It is located on the outskirts of the pretty village of Long Marston and only 7 miles from York. Over 150 years old The Granary has been lovingly converted, retaining many of its original features and now offers luxury throughout providing the perfect base for your family holiday. The kitchen/dining room is huge, and with floor to ceiling windows covering one entire wall, this area is flooded with light and absolutely has the ’wow’ factor. Beautiful stone floors flow throughout the whole of the ground floor and with a central island, granite work tops and a sleek contemporary kitchen this will be the chef in the family’s favourite room. The rest of the family will be able to sit at the large oak table and watch with anticipation whilst delicious meals are cooked for them.
Leading from the kitchen/dining room up two stone steps is the large open plan sitting room which features a bar, large wood burner and a mezzanine gallery. With large comfortable sofas surrounding the fire and a 50" Smart TV, this is the ideal place to put your feet up and relax after a long day exploring the local area. On the first floor all bedrooms are en-suite with bathrooms of an exceptional standard.
Three of the bedrooms offer zip and link kingsize beds providing extra flexibility to cater for all of your family’s needs. A wonderful feature of The Granary is the children’s ‘dorm room’ sleeping six in single beds which also has its own large en-suite with a freestanding roll top bath. On arrival it will be a race upstairs to get your own perfect room! No expense has been spared and with great quality beds and deep mattresses the whole family is guaranteed a great night’s sleep.
The Granary has been decorated to an incredible standard throughout with nothing spared and has wonderful art work on display. To the front of the Granary is an enclosed landscaped garden with far reaching views across the Vale of York and to the rear a beautifully designed communal courtyard. The courtyard offers an area of tranquillity with uplight trees and rosemary bushes scenting the evening area, the perfect place to have an evening drink and sit and enjoy the afternoon and evening sun. A hot tub can also be hired from a local company and delivered to the cottage for an added touch of luxury (by direct arrangement with the owner).
The Granary is incredibly located in an idyllic unspoilt countryside, 7 miles from York, 7 miles from Wetherby, 16 miles from Harrogate and 27 miles from Leeds. Access from the A1 North/South and A64 East/West. The coast is also easily accessible, about an hour’s drive away. The Granary offers an excellent retreat from a busy world with easy access to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors. Everything is on your doorstop! There are also walks and cycle routes from the property. Beach 48 miles. Shop and restaurant 2½ miles, pub 1 mile.

There is plenty to praise about The Granary. Clearly it has been converted and equipped with a lot of thought. There is plenty of seating in the living area and the kitchen table is large, practical and has comfortable seats. The kitchen is well-equipped and we cooked for 10 on several occasions without feeling that we needeed more of anything. Upstairs the bedrooms and bathrooms are smart with good quality linen. Unfortunately the outdoor space is not as described and it is fortunate for us that the weather did not make this as much of an issue as it might have been. We knew that the courtyard was shared with other properties but it was not clear that this was where our only outdoor seating was located. In fact, the placement of the table and chairs was such that we weren't actually sure whether or not they were for our exclusive use. We are a boisterous family and didn't feel comfortable imposing ourselves on a shared space. The Granary has beautiful high windows all along the kitchen and living space, no curtains or blinds. These look out onto the courtyard which means that everyone else can also look in. Zero privacy. So why not use the - and I quote - 'enclosed landscaped garden with far-reaching views across The Vale of York' (also, incidentally, referred to as the 'large garden with terrace and garden furniture')? Because this is, in fact, a tiny patch of lawn, too small for any garden furniture, next to the (much bigger) gravelled car-parking and looking directly onto the farm track and a concrete pad hosting - at the time of our visit - a trailer full of irrigation pipes. Such a pity because families like ours with children and dogs value a garden at the end of a busy day. We had smaller niggles around the nature of being dog friendly. There is a lovely dog basket in the kitchen and nice dog bowls provided but no way of keeping dogs in the kitchen area at night. Again, not an issue for us on this occasion as it didn't rain but dogs with muddy feet would be a different story. This is a shooting estate so dogs really do have to be on leads at all times. Getting off the stony tracks would have been easier if the nearby footpath had been accessible. The field was down to peas so a diversion was in place but as there was shooting cover planted right up to the crop it was almost impossible to walk the path with a dog on a lead. Disappointing. If you like lovely towns, the location is good for York, Harrogate and Knaresborough. At the time of our visit the village pub was closed. The Tickled Trout (menu thoughtfully provided) is slightly further away but well worth a visit. If you are a large group wanting to book the whole complex this would be a great venue. There is plenty of garden space in the other two properties and the courtyard would be excellent for a big get-together. For us, though, the lack of privacy and non-existent garden were a big negative.
