    We had high hopes for our cottage break. Trout End House has been split into two properties. It was a little weird to find one of the doors in the Studio was locked on arrival as it led directly into the adjoining property. Same with the second bedroom, where would have been an adjoining door previously was covered with frosted glass and blinds. However from the corner of the frosted glass you could still see into the adjoining property and they could see into ours! The heating was not on and we had to contact the owner twice who was abroad on holiday, she did turn the heating up and apologised, however if the property is self-contained one would expect for the heating controls to be operated from the property you have booked to stay at. We had a lovely welcome pack of fresh bread, jam, milk, chocolate and cookies. There was no microwave which one would expect. When I have previously booked cottages with Sykes and I have enquired as to whether the kitchen is fully fitted, I know that a certain standard can be expected, I asked this same question at the time of booking and was advised that this was the case. Unfortunately that was not so. There was no foil, kitchen roll, the washing scorer had been used by someone else before. Little things that make a big difference and all add to being “Luxury accommodation” The Cottage is described as Luxury accommodation and romantic. The cottage can it says sleep four people, the second bedroom has a ¾ Queens bed and there is no logical way that two adults would be able to fit in this and have a comfortable nights rest. The second bedroom also shares a bathroom that is ensuite – so if anyone wanted to use the bathroom at night you would have to walk through the master bedroom- not very romantic!. Luckily the occupants were just myself and my partner. The bathroom was lovely and a lovely bath, however there were no bath mats or shower mats so as soon as you came out of the shower you could potentially slip on the tiled floor. Cleanliness- there was dust in the kitchen cupboards, mugs were dirty and had to be run through the dishwasher, underneath the sofas it looked like the place had not been vacuumed and cleaned, there were crumbs and bits down the sides of the bedroom chair. Little things that would make a big difference between a 5 star and 2-3 star accommodation. The living room smelt musty and old and we had to purchase air fresheners to dispel the smell, even airing the accommodation did not help. All in all in its present state this cottage can not be called luxury accommodation, there are steps to be taken for it to be given a such a coveted title. I can get a better standard of accommodation else where and with no hidden and unfortunate surprises!
