"Views over bays and cliffs from a castle stronghold – a unique holiday opportunity . . ."

Watermouth Castle offers a rare combination of opportunities – for not only do visitors have the chance to live in a castle, but they also enjoy unlimited, free entry to one of the West Country’s premier tourist attractions during their stay (please note the castle and theme park will be closed between 29th October 2018 and 5th April 2019 inclusive). Within the splendid castle itself, there are seven superb apartments, an indoor heated swimming pool, a museum, a choice of theme attractions, and some fascinating water displays. Outside, the castle’s 50-acre estate features wonderful landscaped gardens, with plenty of space for strolling and relaxing, and glorious woodland walks. There are ducks and waterfowl to admire on the lake outside the walls, and beautiful views from the castle over Watermouth Bay and its harbour, where there are slipway facilities for visitors’ boats, as well as moorings for larger craft (by arrangement with the harbourmaster).
The castle is a true example of a Victorian folly, completed in the mid 19th century by the Bassett family. Now extensively restored by the current owner, its self-contained holiday apartments are reached through an archway in the south court, where the indoor heated swimming pool is available exclusively to apartment residents. Harbour Apartment (ref FHH) and West Tower Apartment (ref FHJ) are west-facing and overlook the harbour, Rhododendron Apartment (ref FHM), South Court Apartment (ref FHP) and Bassett Apartment (ref FHL) overlook the south court towards the wooded hills, and Penn-Curzon Apartment (ref FHK) has sea views from the living room.

A separate part of the castle, open to the public, contains the fascinating museum collections, including a Victorian kitchen, animated displays, mechanical musical instruments, a large model railway and a unique arcade of pier slot machines, all in working order. In the underground theatre is the Water Spectacular, reputedly one of the best fountain shows in the world, a thrilling mix of lights, music and water. Outside in the grounds are further family entertainments, including traditional rides and slides, fascinating water features, children’s play areas, a ‘Gnomeland’, themed crazy-golf, and much, much more all of which earned Watermouth Castle a place in the finals of the South West Tourism ‘Large Visitor Attraction Of The Year’ Award in 2005.

Watermouth Castle enjoys an incomparable setting on rising ground, commanding views over the bays and cliffs of the magnificent coastline stretching away to the east. Take a woodland walk through the estate to the picturesque, award-winning village of Berrynarbor, or visit the coastal village of Combe Martin (less than 3 miles to the east) – famous not only for its sandy coves, inlets and majestic headlands but also as ‘the gateway to the Exmoor National Park’. Combe Martin offers a choice of shops and cafes, and one of Devon’s oldest inns! Ilfracombe is only a five minute drive away to the west, with a range of seaside attractions, good shops and a golf course, and visitors can enjoy miles of golden sand at nearby Woolacombe and Croyde Bay. Superb cliff-top scenery and beautiful wooded valleys make this one of North Devon’s most scenic areas – as well as a paradise for walkers. Beach 500 yards. Shops 2 miles, pub 1 mile.

Having holidayed at Watermouth Castle for many years, this was our first stay in the Clock Tower Apartment. Everything was absolutely perfect. The Castle and Theme Park attractions are incredibly well run, and this apartment is no exception. Highly recommended!

We had a wonderful holiday at Watermouth Castle. The clock tower apartment was huge and had everything we needed. The beds were also very comfortable. The theme park was amazing! My 2 boys (2 and 8) loved it, so much to keep them busy. Highly recommend!

Excellent all round. Pity about the lack of cleaning consumables and lack of towels. Loved the very high and very 4 poster bed. An amazing place to stay. Would love to return.

This was our 3rd stay at Watermouth Castle and definitely won’t be our last. We brought our 3 year old for the first time and she absolutely loved it. Our older two children (teenagers) were also pleasantly surprised by how much they enjoyed it. The apartment is extremely spacious and had everything we needed. We spent a lot of time in the park. The rides are all perfect for little ones and there was never a queue. We did eat in most evenings because it suited us to do so, but it is only a short drive to pubs and restaurants. We recommend this place to everyone we know and look forward to our next visit.

We had an excellent stay in exceptional accommodation. The apartment was amazing: fully equipped kitchen, huge bedrooms with comfortable beds, clean bathrooms, loads of space, use of external space a bonus. The pool was brilliant and having the park right on our doorstep included in the price just made the holiday even better. I have already recommended it to family and friends with young children. The staff were helpful, friendly and welcoming. There was even a huge collection of DVDs available to borrow free of charge. The local amenities were excellent due to the central location. The only negative would be that the heating system was quite noisy in the main bedroom through the night but this is probably due to the age of the property. Overall the best holiday accommodation we have stayed in with children.

We all had a really good holiday staff were very good, admittance to the Castle on arrival brilliant although we were later than we thought due to road closure. The children really enjoyed the theme park as did we adults. My daughter has been twice before and would definitely go again. Unfortunately both those times we were unable to go due my husband being in hospital but we would also certainly go back. The place was nice and quiet and no one bothered us at all.

Wonderful holiday in a beautiful area. Staying at the castle was so exciting for our two-year-old. We got a lot of use out of the pool and enjoyed visiting the castle attractions (twice!) and the theme park. Nothing was too much trouble and when we asked about moving a couple of things to make it more two-year-old friendly this was done for us.
